Hi all-
I've been using the LUSH 'OXEO CUBE' for years and milked it to the last blessed drop since it was discontinued about a year ago now.
I'm so gutted as it was heaven and I used it for about 6 years. It was based on bicarbonate of soda and smelled so heavenly and always kept me fresh and dry.
I know LUSH stil do others but the smells are medicinal (i.e. tea tree oil based-yuck!)
does anyone have any good experiences with natural ones (i.e. no aluminum, no propylene glycol and NOT crystal based -read those were bad..)
I've recently purchased the Weleda citrus one as I really like Weleda products and so far it's ok but not long lasting enough and I prefer a chalky/powdery textured one to a liquid..
I think I may try the LUSH coconut powder one..anyone tried that?
I'd appreciate any suggestions you lovelies may have! |

I found the Weleda citrus to be too drying,
after 2 days of use my underarms were flaky and dry, and normally they are never like that.
I'm now using the Weleda to freshen up during the day,and not rebuying it.
I just bought the Logona Pur Deo Spray
made in Germany
-for sensitive skin
-anti-allergy tested
-no perfume
-no colorant or artificial perfumes
ingredients sre:
Water,Amonium Alum,Cinnamic acid
does not smell like anything at all, does not burn my skin.
paid $15 for the 100ml bottle
I happen to have the packaging onmy desk for this right now, that's why I know this.
bougt that online at another cosmetic site. |

Try mineral salts. They naturally kill bacteria and work amazingly well. I have a 'stone' and it needs to be wetted before applying. It dries fast and works immediately. The only downfall is that these types of deoderants do not prevent persperation.
I found some at a health food store (Whole Foods) and you can also find them on line. Look for some like the Crystal Body Deoderant |

thanks Ottawa Shopper for the feedback.Interesting the Weleda dried you out... I haven't experienced that yet..as for Logona I like that line and use one of their anti-aging face products but I really prefer something with scent
Foxe I'm not keen on crystal as I mentioned above. Apparently Crystal Deodorant stones are made from Alum and contain aluminum. There's alot of stuff about it if you search it |

I was concerned about that when I first investigated using this deoderant and it's not an aluminum that you have to worry about. It's a different type and not the one that causes concern. AND, I wouldn't think a health food store would stock something not healthy for us anyway. |

please don't be naive regarding health food stores and the health industry-they are not always aware and they may stock what is popular. There are a lot of great products and educated people but in my years of being a nutrional therapist I went to many stores where the staff didn't have a clue. Also,do you know how many big organic health brands have been bought out by companies like Kelloggs and how many supplement brands have been bought up by pharmaceutical companies?Sadly it all comes down to money the majority of the time Here in the UK the biggest health food chain Holland and Barrett is the biggest load of rubbish and sells loads of 'unhealthy' crap.
here's a great chart for the foods to give you an idea of who owns what-it's pretty interesting
http://www.certifiedorganic.bc.ca/rcbtoa/services/corporate-acquisitions.html
perhaps your particular deodorant brand is ok though it sounds like they are all the same but here is a bit from what Dr. Mercola very recently wrote about the crystal deodorants on his very respected website for health and wellness. It's just not worth the risk to me...
Quote: |
“Crystal” deodorant stones are a popular natural deodorant alternative, often used by health-conscious shoppers looking to avoid the aluminum and other chemicals common in most antiperspirants and deodorants.
However, if you’re looking to avoid aluminum, crystal deodorants may not be your best choice.
While many claim to be aluminum-free, they are referring to aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum hydroxybromide or aluminum zirconium.
These types of aluminum are widely used in antiperspirants and deodorants. The aluminum is taken into sweat ducts in the top layer of your skin where they act as a plug, stopping the flow of sweat to your skin’s surface.
There is evidence, however, that this aluminum is absorbed into your body where it may cause serious damage.
The aluminum in crystal deodorant stones is a different type of compound known as an alum, the most common form being potassium alum, also known as potassium aluminum sulfate.
Potassium Alum or Ammonium Alum are natural mineral salts made up of molecules that are too large to be absorbed by your skin. They form a protective layer on your skin that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria. These deodorants are recommended by many cancer treatment centers.
But while this may be a better alternative to most antiperspirants and deodorants on the market, it is not completely aluminum-free. |

ive used E Plus High C roll-on by Aubrey for many years..it's the purest natural deodorant i've found...it works well for me...but it's mild...so it may not work well for everybody. |

I have tried many, including expensive organic one, but I really don't like the scent. I recently got one from China, which is as clear as water, no scent and it works perfect! |

I did not notice this until the next day-but my underarms looked very dry and flaky
also can not use this after shaving..so am using this up as a "refresher" spray.
Origins has a nice deodorant stick.
I'm pretty sure it has no aluminium-but I do not think it is 100% natural.
Smells nice, and the stick lasts a long time.
My jason deodorants always wear down so quickly.
I also like the brand Green Beaver.
It is Canadian made and made inmy city.
I'vemet the owner of the company a few times when he had a booth at the vegetarian and also the raw food show.
Not sure if any US stores sell that brand,
but I know it is listed on Well.ca
I've only tried one of the fragrance free deodorants, and would rebuy this. |

Hi all. I have tried a pile of expensive all natural deodorants and not one of them has ever worked as well as the one I've been making for myself for the past few months:
-2/3 cup cornstarch
-1/3 cup baking soda
-5 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil
-10 drops of lavender (cuz I like the scent, but it is optional)
-also optional, 10 drops of sage oil
You have to melt the coconut oil and add everything together. I keep mine in a little pot with a lid on my bathroom counter. I just scoop some out with my fingers in and rub into my armpits. I am still amazed by how well it works. I live in CO, where it is pretty warm, but it even worked when I was in New Orleans for a week. I also poured some into an old (cleaned) deo container and I keep it in the fridge. |

thanks everyone for your suggestions.Still no luck for me:(
I've tried a few more- I'm starting to think I am much stinkier than I thought?! LOL. The only thing natural that ever seemed to work for me was the LUSH Oxeo Cube because it was based on Cornstarch and Baking soda which I think acts more as anti-perspirant too(I could go a few days without re-applying and be just fine)
It was kind of like your recipe Winni, that looks really good but I am too bloody lazy to make my own stuff!
SO FYI- so far I've tried:
Weleda Citrus Deodorant-best of the bunch but not great..
Kiss My Face Active Enzyme Deodorant Stick(smells so good!!-so disappointed it doesn't work for me:( .Not sure the name of scent but says scented and has pic of a creamy yellow flower on and a yellow/peach color label)
LUSH - Coconut deodorant powder(unfortunately no luck with this one
I noticed the Kiss My Face has some baking soda in it but I think in a deodorant stick format there just isn't enough to help me.
I think I am going to have to go with one of the bars LUSH still do now like the TEO since it is the closest I just really didn't like the smell much- the Oxeo Cube scent was seriously divine! grrr -if they brought it back as one of their retro short term re-released items I'd stock up for years! |

I like miessence.
I use the aroma free version, even though they offer one called tahitian breeze that I personally think smells great. My husband absolutely hates the smell, though, he says it smells like patchouli
I like it but I miss smelling nice, so am actually looking at the Alvera Almond one right now, thanks gumdropday |

tried mineral salt and I find it good. However, it does not rid of perspiration..
I pound these into baby powder in order to use, not to wet these though...

I use Tom's of Maine natural deodorant. Some other really good ones (recommended by the authors of No More Dirty Looks) are Lavanila The Healthy Deodarant (hey, it has the word "healthy" in its name!) and Weleda Sage or Citrus Deodorant. |

Oh my gosh this sounds like the best stuff ever! Pit Putty by Bubble & Bee
Unfortunately only available it seems to those in the U.S. The reviews are incredible and it even has money back guarantee. Simple ingredient list protects from odor and sweat and from the sounds of it has my kind of fresh scent.
http://www.bubbleandbee.com/servlet/the-92/natural-deodorant%2C-organic-deodorant%2C/Detail
I found several of the recommended ones tended to be too much based on patchouli and sandalwood spicy type smells which aren't really for me that or crystal/rock/salt based which I also don't want...
Thanks for so many of your suggestions though- very helpful to put the pieces together and research:) Also, some are not available in the UK and those that are still not quite right..at least not enough to order sight unseen.
BUT this 'Pit Putty' I must have. I've written the company to see if it's sold at any stores and then maybe a friend of mine who lives there can bring some when they come to visit next month! fingers crossed!
Anyone heard of it or tried it??
p.s. I know there are 2 threads now here on this topic but I am too lazy to post in both -the other is from 2007 that somehow just got revived after I started mine so maybe best to keep this one going for newer recommendations etc.. |

Hi everyone, I just had to comment and second the recipe given by winni333. Mine is similar...just uses arrowroot powder instead of cornstarch. I don't add any extra oil but I do add a little shea butter I ordered from garden of wisdom...just a little. I make this and give it away to people because I know they will all be amazed but never bother to try it unless I help them along! It really works. I have tried so many natural deodorants and they have all failed miserably. Go try this now!! |

Just FYI -the Pit Putty from Bubble & Bee I posted above is based on arrowroot powder
Hats off to you ladies making your own stuff I much prefer to buy it in solid form and in a pretty package and not have to source all ingredients ,find organic etc.. I guess especially in this case where it is rather inexpensive item ($8.95)that will last quite a while.. |
