I'm gonna be all selfish here and see if I can tap into the collective wisdom of the group. I'm so blasted confused with what sort of skin care routine to embark upon.

Info: I'm 40 with dry, pasty pale skin, lines, dull (skin, not personality. Well, maybe.), nose slightly oilier than rest of face. But I'm prone to small blackheads and lots of nose pore congestion. I think my childhood of tanning and burning at the pool is starting to rear it's ugly head. Dry skin making me start to show age in a way that's entirely unacceptable. Yuck.

Please help a girl to look a little less scary.

What are you using now, MEMEME! Laughing I think the best anti-aging things are sunscreen every single day, a retinoid at night, and an anti-oxidant serum during the day.

I agree with Riley and you might look into OCM for the congested pores.

I think your MEMEME name for the thread is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh! Laughing

Wow, that was a fast response! Oh- okay. Now I am using loads of Aveeno stuff. Including: the calming cleanser, I mix a bit of L-ascorbic acid into a bit of TJ's Aloe Gel, sometimes with a little dollop of sea kelp bioferment, then Aveeno spf 15 day moisturizer. At night I am using the same cleanser, then copper peptide serum from NCN, followed by a slathering of either Almond oil or NCN night cream. I probably have the dryness under control. I'm thinking I probably need some good glycolic something or other??? I'm nearly through breastfeeding (I think), so maybe I can try retin-A, which seems like the logical next step....

Well, ya know when you get to the point in life after giving non-stop for a long time, and then you need some attention? I'm there. Coddle me. Laughing

LMAO. I wish someone would coddle me, too! Laughing

If you are using some of Nanci's products, why not write to her for suggestions? She is a sweety and knows her stuff!

Okay. This is a good starting point. I will start with OCM- see how that goes for a while. Then gently ease into some Retin-A action. And email Nanci. This sounds like a good plan of attack- and here's a big, comforting, coddling hug to you, rileygirl. Very Happy

Thanks, DarkMoon! My husband barely notices when I get my hair done. And, it can be quite drastic at times... so sad, but oh so true!!

I love the title, too! Laughing

You know what cured my dull skin? Epidermx micro-dermabrasion scrub. It's available here on EDS now, too: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/naturderm-epidermix-ii-p_7519.htm

I don't exactly follow the instructions. What I do is use it once (or occasionally twice) a week and gently scrub my face with it for a minute. Follow that up with using a really good moisturiser and you should see a big difference and have more of a glow.

Another great product for making your skin look fresh and glowy is Karin Herzog's Essential Mask. I leave it on overnight once a week and find that works brilliantly.

I guess one of the (many) nice things about being single is that I can (and do) coddle myself.

I don't know if you've seen the thread on the Wonderbar, craftwhack, but it's worked really well for congested pores and blackheads for some people. It hasn't worked for everyone and it is an expensive experiment, but I'll send you a bar if you want to try it. There - how's that for coddling?

My DH only pays attention to how much time I spend paying attention to my skin! (Gotta sneak off every now and then so it doesn't look so bad.)

Nanci is a great one for advice - good tip.

And I'll second skippies advice on the Wonderbar. I had some seriously clogged pores and blackheads from using 302 last year (for 6 mos) and the WB has really help clear that all up. So has the High Frequency device and Dermawand(which is a smaller HF device).

Welcome to the forum! wave

Oh, wonderbar. Okay, I'll skip off and read up on it. It's worth a try, right?
I also think that the DHC cleansing oil looks interesting. Maybe I can start with that and gently transition into the OCM. I know I wouldn't adhere to all that massaging time, what with a wee little baby taking up all my time.
Time to throw air kisses and chocolates and hugs to all of you who need some virtual coddling- Oh, and also, your skin looks absolutely stunning today! (I can tell I'm going to be the person on these forums who adds absolutely nothing of importance.) Very Happy

craftwhack,

I say you already add a great deal of importance with your humor and sweet nature! Smile
Having had 4 of those sweet wee ones I know how it feels to try to find time for yourself, but treasure every moment they grow up sooo fast! Smile

I'd try exfoliation on a nightly basis - I use lacsal from SkinBiology - alternating with Retin A. This keeps the pores happy. Some other methods to try are pumpkin peel from NCN - but there are many others designed to help exfoliate - these are just my favorites.

I recommend the Gly-luronic serum from makeupartistschoice.com. It's a mix of glycolic and hyaluronic acids. Took away my dullness and clogged pores, makes my skin glow, also hydrates my dry, dehydrated skin.

I'll be 40 in October and have overhauled my skincare in the last year. I shut my acne and blackheads down several years ago with the pill. My skin issues are similar, minus the oil.
This is what's working for me:
*Rhassoul soap.
Cheaper than the Wonderbar, made from exotic clay from Morroco. Really love it. Use twice a day.
http://www.ncnproskincare.com/rhassoul-facial-cleansing-bar.html
*the Clarisonic. Sensitive brush is better than the normal. Helps to brighten the skin a little and if nothing else is highly relaxing to use.
*Microcurrent facelift devices, Nuface and Tua Viso. recommend the TV over the Nuface. If you have the extra $100, get the Tua Trend. Really helps lift up the mid face.
*Copper peptides; CP Serum from Skin Biology. Have had the uglies a few days out of 8+ weeks of use. Is firming and toning my skin, plan to continue to use irregardless. Feel the benefits outweigh the problems.
http://www.skinbio.com/cpserum.html
I haven't bothered to buy emu oil so am using olive oil to moisturize.

A few days a week I use a cheap mask from Freeman, Pineapple Enzyme mask. Makes me skin really smooth.
http://www.amazon.com/Freeman-Feeling-Beautiful-Facial-Pineapple/dp/B000O9O4YU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1280195883&sr=8-2

I've also started using a European sunscreen called Bioderma. The spf 50 is more for outdoors use. I haven't tried to wear makeup over it.

I probably still look my age more or less, just less wrinkly and haggard. HTH.
