For several months I was in the bad habit of squeezing blackheads out of my nose using my fingers and a foolish amount of pressure. Then one day it hit me that I was completely ruining my skin by doing this and I had developed lots of tiny wrinkles all over the top of my nose. It looks like the skin's elasticity has been worn out and now it's just sitting there loosely. I'm only 21 so it's definitely not wrinkles brought on by old age.
I came to this forum since the members here seem so knowledgeable about skin health and general science behind skin care.
So my question is, does anyone know if this is the type of thing that will heal itself if I just give it enough time? Or is it possible that I did permanent damage to my skin? |

You are so young, so I doubt you have done permanent damage. If you are determined to remove the blackheads yourself, I suggest you buy a blackhead remover tool - it's a long needle with a loop on one end that you place over the blackhead and then press on the skin. The blackhead then pops out without having to overly handle the skin.
I suggest you try some form of exfoliation, maybe a Pumpkin Peel - this will also help clean out your pores and refine your "damaged" skin. |

Yeah I bought a blackhead extractor a while ago and it just didn't work. It required way more pressure than I ever had to use with my fingers.
I just wanted to make sure that my skin actually would heal on its own, because I've gone about 2 months now trying to be as gentle and moisturizing as possible with my skin and it still looks pretty terrible. I'll look into pumpkin peels but I'm very careful about staying away from anything that might further dry out my skin. |

Foddy, i used to squeeze my nose a lot too. i don't recall getting permanent wrinkles. If you're concerned, definitely look into an exfoliator and even using some kind of retinoid. Wear sunscreen always while using these kinds of products. I think a good, steady skin care regime will help lessen any damage. |

I have to confess, I know this may gross out some of you. I LOVE squeezing out blackheads. It's literally a purging experience when those suckers come out, and you can squeeze them again out of spite just because they shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Anway, the creases should only be temporary. Do try to massage them out with a good cream after you cleanse your face. I don't recommend squeezing them out if you have a tendency to scar. |

Just to say I very much agree with the others, I doubt you have done permanent damage.
The skin is always dealing with a variety of stresses/strains each day with our lifestyles, environments (air con etc) and diets, that at times it can become overstressed, particularly if things like blackhead removal are being done, but it is a living thing that does grow throughout our lives. So I would also advise you to stock up on supplements to help your body help heal up your skin (things like Vit C and MSM are proven to help the skin), and make sure your diet is healthy too to really help yourself from the inside out in conjunction with perhaps the peels and all.
This way your really help your skin to be healthy and as a result the skin's elasticity will start renewing itself too. |

Thanks for the input, everyone! I just wanted to make sure there was some hope for my skin because I've been letting it heal for 2 or 3 months now and it has shown little improvement. It seems to be getting better, but only very, very slowly.
SeanySeanUK, I have been frantically adding foods and supplements to my diet that allegedly replenish collagen and skin health, so I've been getting plenty of that. Although I'm unfamiliar with MSM so I'll have to check that out.
Currently I'm using jojoba oil and avocado oil and little else. I'm hoping that by being as gentle as possible with my skin it will be able rebuild itself. I guess we'll see in the next few months. |

Thats wonderful, your skin will thank you for this time, but do research into MSM, your be quite surprised by it. Even with supplements, you need to take them regularly for the body to get used to having such supplies and being able to use them effectively, so you have a tough job in that you got to be patient, but results will come (and although they may now seem somewhat slowly, in the long term your skin is dealing with a multitude of tasks and in today's world we often are tougher on our skins much more so than we would be with a person).
Give yourself more than a few months, as your working from the inside out so a few months isn't really sufficient time to get the full benefit of these things.
