Hi, i tried the jaw reduction by botox, 25 units in each side of my jaw. I think it works if the botox gets in the right jaw muscles. My right side is now smaller and my face looks much less squarish on that side after 6 weeks. However, my left has not changed much, and the weird thing is when I smile, I could not smile as wide on my left side. The corner of my left mouth also doesn't curve upward. It goes straigt out when I try to smile, and it looks like something stops it from going further, and it creates a line at that corner of my mouth. So I conclude that the doctor injected botox to the wrong muscles on the left side. I don't think I'd do this again as it's so weird to not be able to smile big. It makes me look like a fake person who is super insincere. The smile never reaches my eyes. I'm stuck with this look for 2 more months I think. |

Hi Natalyn,
Would it be possible for another doctor to asses your situation and correct it??
Sounds like your right side ended up with the results you were after. I've often thought of this route too since my face has taken on that "squarish" appearance.
Good luck and let us know what you do! |

I am thinking of giving it two more weeks and go back to the doctor to show him what's going on. I don't know if he can correct it. I don't know if other doctors know how to do this. |

kims - you should go back in before the 2 wks are up. Sometimes a little touch up is all that's needed. They don't always know what amt is needed and each side of the face could react differently.
I have a bit of a square jawline myself, but if it takes 50 units for both sides, that's a bit too much of an expense. I'll keep my squareness, thank you. |

hi foxe, i can't imagine getting 50 units in each jaw! 25 units already paralyze me so well and my face is so distorted when I try to smile. |

IMO you should contact the doctor now, not wait. I would have been back there a couple of weeks later! |

Hi Natalyn, I am interested in having this done. The square shape of my face has always bothered me. Was wondering how much you paid, how long the effect is supposed to last & if you'll have to.go in & have it done again. I've read the effect lasts for up to 18 months but that at some point after a few injections becomes permanent. Hope you are able to find a doctor to fix the other side of your face. |

I would call now and at least let them know whats going on. He may say wait 2 weeks, but mostly likely he will want to see you. It sounds like you just need a touch up. I have had them inject into my lower chin muscles for lip creases and clenching and the first few times I had to have an adjustment. I don't get the exact amount on each side. Same for my 11's when I did it. I had one eyebrow that always seems to need a touch more. |

I've done it recently too! My square jaws never was a big concern unroll recently when I've put on quite a bit of weight. In photos my face just look so massive! I decided to give this a try to see if I can look "slimmer" in photos. I'm not sure the amt being used but it should be quite a fair bit. Something along the line of 50 or 100 per side?? I will check again w my doc.
While my jaws are still defined, my face looks smaller overall. I did not have problem of limited smile but what I did notice is that I get tired really fast when I'm chewing food.
Also to share, the doc mentioned that for best results, the Korean method is recommended. It's getting the jabs during 1st mth followed by 3rd and 6th then the 12th mth. After which annual maintenance required.

My doctor charged me $7.50 a unit because I bought 100 units (50 for the jaws and 50 for my one calf). I had to go back to get more in my calves since my calf muscles are so strong, and he reduced it to $7 a unit. That took care of my right calf but the left is still tight. My left calf muscle is very strong. |

Ok, Annie and Josh. I think you're both right. I need to make an appointment and have him look at it. |

THat's great! I'm so glad I'm not the only one to do this. Please let me know what your doctor said about # of units. How did you find this doctor? Was he advertising jaw reduction by botox? My doctor didn't. I just asked about it since he's my regular botox doctor.

Natalyn,
I actually have a doctors appointment next month to discusses this procedure. I have TMJ and my jaw keeps clicking while opening and closing.
Not being able to smile on one side is scary.I think it should wear off with in 3 months.
I will check with my doc too, I will let you know

Hi all, sorry for late update. I tried to reach my doc but only managed to get the clinical nurse. I must be a cow cos apparently i had close 50 each side!!! In where i live, the trend is to have small oval face shape so every aesthetic doc is advertising for these services. Thats how i found this doc.
I still smile normal though (i think...) although during the first couple of weeks i did experience lack of strength when it comes to chewing my food.
Not that im complaining though...not having the strength to eat is COOL! |

Thank you! Maybe I should look for a different doctor. I still feel all fake when I try to smile with an open mouth. Smiling with lips closed is ok.

It's hard for me to chew, too, but I don't think that my face is becoming that oval. What state are you in? Or if you're not in the US, which country are you in?

Natalyn,
I'm in Singapore. Where the regulations regarding such procedures seems to be in their infancy stage. From what I'm aware, FDA states that 50 units is safe and clinics operating in US need to observe this. (I might be wrong...) So where I stay, the FDA guidelines are probably just guidelines???
Anyway, I called up a few clinics after reading some of your posts and quotes given to me over the phone mainly are for 50 units or lesser. So I'm still trying to get the DOCTOR himself to talk to me instead of the forever hustled receptionist.
The injection was done on 2 spots on each side of the face. One spot should be where the main jaw muscle is cos I was asked to clench my teeth for the doc to see the exact spot to inject. Then the 2nd jab was done at mid pt between spot 1 and the chin area.
So other than having weak chewing for first few weeks, the first week also had my ears ringing. Which I attribute to the injection. I did not manage to see much difference initially but friends did comment that my face look 'smaller'. Its only recently that I can notice the difference when I look at myself in the mirror. (and when i take a pic of myself with my hp)
However, I no longer experience the lack of strength in chewing, am starting to see one side smaller than the other and also able to feel myself clenching my teeth. And now I'm into my 2nd month (barely).
So although the effects came on quite fast for me, it is also wearing off quite fast. WHICH I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT.
Next thing I would need to find out..maybe you could ask the same of your doc..what is the brand of 'botox' that is being administered? BOTOX is TM by ALLERGAN, and i'm not sure if there are other competitive brands out in the market with other brand names and serves similar purpose. If so, it is very possible that doctors might be using different brands and hence different dosages are required?
Oh gosh..the more I look in the mirror, the more i see the chewing side getting bigger by the minute.
Oops...sorry for the ranting..I was suppose to be providing useful input for u. |

Hi bree, my doc injected in two spots on each side of my jaws, too. The first spot was as you described but the second I thought was above it. I might be wrong. I am not sure if my face is getting smaller. I keep changing my mind about that. I'm in my 2nd month, too. My strength in chewing is also coming back, but I still can't smile too big. My lips cannot stretch out wide, which is great for my crow's feet since I can't crinkle my eyes. However, I hate this look because I look like I want to cry when I try to smile big. My face feels distorted to me. It's not as bad now as the effect of botox is going away. I don't think I want to get more injection in my jaws after this one. Will you? I can't wait to get my smile back. The botox my doc used is from allegen. They have dysport from another company but it's a diff brand. |

Hi Natalyn, I NEED HELP!! I just got botox for jaw reduction done last Tuesday and I'm having the SAME problem! I can't smile big and my face looks so distorted I'm so upset and depressed!
Did the smile problem go away? And how long did it take?
I went to another doc for the botox cos he's cheaper but now I'm paying for the price of a botched job. I'm thinking of going back to my previous doc who's really good (but more expensive) to see if anything can be done. Any advice? |

Curious as to why you get Botox in the calf muscles?
I have never heard of this.
I thought it was "good" to have strong calf muscles?
I guess it depends what you are doing though?
I'm interested in getting Botox for the "11"'s but then I also react badly to almost every medication...so not sure it is a good idea for me. |
