Hi
Wondering if people could help me please. I am needing a gentle nudge in the right direction of skincare and just don’t know really what to try. I keep trying to read threads on here but it just gets so confusing and there are so so many I seem to be getting in more of a pickle
Firstly I am 42 years old and live in the UK. It seems I am also going through the menopause for the last year or so which has not helped me emotionally as well as (I feel) made my skin age. My skin I can see has lost elasticity and firmness all over. I do have a deep frown line between the eyes which does make me look angry. My eyes have a lot of crepiness directly underneath the eyes and crows feet ( I don’t mind crows feet too much as most people get these when they smile but would still like to maybe erase them a little). I also have slight eyebags which are there permanently and on some days can be quite puffy.
I exercerise 4 / 5 time a week and try to eat healthily. I am also drinkingmore water which to be honest I do struggle with but finding boiled water with a dash of lemon is something I can drink ok and throughout the day
I am looking at help / advice on the following:-
Vitamin C - I have just bought a small sample of this of EBay Skinceuticals to use. I am expecting this to come shortly
Retin A / Renova - I would like to try this as ive read good reports on this. Can this help with my under eye crepiness and firming that area up? Also I am not sure where to buy it from. I did ask my dr and she said I don’t have real bad acne so will not prescribe it to me. I explained it was for an anti aging treatment but still no Where would be the best and safest place to buy Retin A / Renova (I think I need the cream rather than the gel as I have read the cream to be less drying and I can have a tendancy to flaky patches
Eye Cream - completely clueless as what way to go. I would like something to help with the crepiness and slight eyebags (and crows feet).
Frown line - not sure if anything can help with this but would like to know if there is
Day and Night cream - I am also looking for a day and night cream to help with mositurinsing and firming etc
I have heard the Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect range is supposed to be good but I just thought that people on here could give me better advice about better creams
Thank you all for your help

Hi Sally,
Vitamin C: Be careful.... often times the serums (even from SkinCeuticals) are oxidised and oxidised ascorbic acid is pro-oxidant (the opposite of what you want and what you're paying a lot of money for!). If the colour is any darker than the palest champagne, toss it.
I'd suggest you try Paula's Choice Resist Antioxidant Concentrate (available at paulaschoice.co.uk). It contains several stable (won't oxidise) forms of vitamin C along with lots of other antioxidants. It's my favourite.
Retin-A/Renova: You could see a private derm in the UK. No referral is required but you will have to pay for the consultation. Unfortunately though, Retin-A is only available in the gel form here, so unless your skin is very oily it's not ideal.
I have purchased Retin-A from inhousepharmacy.co.uk before (as have many others here and on other forums). They only ever stock the real-deal and no prescription is required (they ship from Vanuatu). If the value of your order is over £18 (which it will be with the brand-name product) and customs spot it you'll have to pay the VAT plus an £8 handling fee before they'll deliver it to you.
Another option is alldaychemist.com which sell mostly generics, often manufactured in India. I'm not keen on using these generic prescription products as you can never be completely certain as to the quality of the product. The bases are also quite different to the bases of the brand-name products, and the base ingredients can make a big difference to the overall effectiveness of the product.
You could also look at an over-the-counter retinoid. I quite like Paula's Choice Resist moisturiser, which contains antioxidants and a high dose of retinol. I use it nightly under the Resist Serum and the combination works really well for me.
Another brand to look at is Avene. They make several products including Eluage and Diacneal that are readily available in the UK. Eluage contains 0.05% retinaldehyde (a very potent form of retinol) in a creamy base. Diacneal, while sold as an acne treatment, also works well for anti-aging purposes. It contains 0.1% retinaldehyde and 6% glycolic acid.
Eye cream: Not necessary IMO. All the products I use on my face can be used around the eye area too. My attitude is if it's not good for my eye area then it's not good for my face. I use my face sunscreen around my eyes, as well as the Paula's Choice products.
Frown lines: Not much you can do about those with topicals really. They may fade slightly over time but the results won't be dramatic. Your best bet here is Botox.
Day/night cream: For day, a good sunscreen, many of which are moisturising is all most people need. Anything that "firms" is only a temporary, cosmetic effect. Your skin will start to firm over 6 to 12 months once you start using retinoids and antioxidant serums.
For night, your retinoid of choice. If you end up ordering a prescription retinoid and IF you are very dry after applying it, wait 30 minutes then apply something bland like Cetaphil Cream which is now available in the UK from most pharmacies (often behind the counter). If you were to use the Paula's Choice Resist moisturiser or either of the Avene products I mentioned, you probably wouldn't need an additional moisturiser.
You might also consider the regular use of a mild glycolic acid product. It will help to remove dead skin cells that can make the skin look a little "blah". It can also help with collagen building (firming the skin). Again, Paula's Choice makes my favourite, the 8% AHA Gel.
Hope that's helped a little |

I love the Karin Herzog products. I just started using them and have noticed a tremendous difference in my skin. I'm 44yrs old. Before starting with KH, I had already incorporated DMAE and Vit C serum. I use PSF brand for those. It made a big difference for me, but KH really stook my skin to the next level.
I do have some fine lines around my eyes and mouth, but my skin is still relatively firm. The KH has definitely helped with the fine lines. Overall I just find that my skin looks much brighter and healthier. It also feel like silk.
I also had eye lift (bleph) surgery on the 24th of September. It was the best thing I did for myself. It was fairly inexpensive (as far as plastic surgeries go), because it was done with local freezing and in the dr's. office. I used to feel like I had a truck sitting on my eye brows. Because my skin is still firm, it wasn't drooping, but I had a lot of skin. The DR told me that it would eventually start to droop, but that I could have it done before that happened. I was never ableto see my eyelid before (when my eyes were open). I can now. It has made a huge difference in how I feel about my face. I felt like I looked sleepy all the time. My DH said that my eyes looked really big again.
I'm not one to push plastic surgery, but I a really glad I did this. There isn't any cream or exercise or even diet that could have removed the excess skin I had above my eyes. |

Hi Salster68 -
I didn't see sunscreen on your list. You might already have one you like, but if not, add sunscreen to your list of goodies to get. Lots of recommendations on EDS - Devita, Burnout, etc.
For retin A, I've ordered stuff from both All Day Chemist and InHousePharmacy. Decent products and both seem legit. I suggest you start with .025% retin A cream. Use it every three days to start, then every two, and if your skin can handle it then every day. Give your skin time to get used to it. You may get some redness and peeling, but some folks don't.
On the vitamin C, personally I like the DIY type. Fresher that way.
Eye cream is tough - everyone is so individual here on what they like. And there are so many reviews. Maybe target a few noted on EDS and try to get some samples. I personally like Garden of Wisdom's Eye Majik cream and the TNS eye repair. |

I LOVE the KH eye cream. It is one of the best products in the KH line IMO.
It soaks in so well that you can easily use it during the day without fear of it either running into your eyes or ruining your makeup.
Good luck. It is hard to find a system that works for you. It is easy to go in many different directions and spend a lot of money before you find something that you like, can afford and give you the results you hope for. |

I think this is an excellent choice to start with. Skinceuticals CE Ferulic has a good reputation. Samples are the perfect way to see if you like it.
It is pricey - that's why I make my own version of the essentially same thing. |

A good choice of Vita C. I also purchase the same sample pack from eBay. But, as said before - be careful about the colour of the serum. Is it darker than pale champagne, it's useless. That's why I prefer the sample pack - not so fun to throw away a half bottle of the serum.. and I also always store it in the refrigerator. |

Hi Salster - I remember you writing previously (maybe last year) for help but it seems like you're doing a little better. I urge you to research on EDS - it is a virtual encyclopedia of guidance in terms of honest evaluations, expectations, and guidance. It has helped me immensely.
Keep at it - I suggest an LED light if you can (anti aging light stim is a big hit here) and a dermaroller for best product penetration. These are my favorites. Oh - and facial exercise and massage. I do these everyday without fail to some degree. Good luck - Improvements are slow most of the time - but slow and steady win the race. |

Hi Vailj
Thank you again and to everyone else.
Yes SisterSweets I did post on here before. I got such tremendous help from so many lovely ladies on here. It was very overwhelming. I don’t have my own pc now so unless I can take a laptop home from work I have to come on here during work when I can.
Im still struggling with issues I have about myself. Quite bad in fact as they are getting worse the older I get. I not only see me as being ugle but have bought old looking into the equation now. Somedays I don’t even want to leave the house. Weekends I can finish work on a Friday and completely shut myself away curtains drawn all weekend and just hide.
I do seem to have aged alittle bit faster some more as it looks like im going through the perimenopause which has devastated me as ive never met anyone, been married and had children yet which I would have loved. Im trying to sort myself out as in liking me for me and wanting to really try with my skincare as I know if I can sort this out in some way and get some improvement I will feel better. It does certainly give you a boost.
Ive got the vitamin C as mentioned above. Imreally struggling with what eye cream to try for the crepiness and I need a good day and night moisturizer. I just don’t know which way to go I keep reading threads on here but im so confused as to what is working for people and what is not. I read something and then something else and well, unless your quite clued up (im not) its so hard. Im looking for a moisturizer day and night to also firm and tighten my skin (if possible) as well as moisturize
I really would appreciate peoples comments.
Im also wonderingif there are any non surgical treatments like thermage or something I should maybe look into. I read somewhere about thermage being good for skin tightening and can be used around the eye to
Best wishes to everyone and thank you to those who have been helping me. It really does mean such a lot as im sure other ladies on here who receive help also feel that
