I'm pretty sure it was an IPL treatment. I remember I was alarmed when she told me, because I had been to the same Skin Clinic and had one IPL treatment there myself. I'm not sure if it was the RF type instrument. I don't know enough about it. If I knew her name I would call and ask her!

Bingo, that is exactly why I'm on here discussing this. Because all of the risks of having these devices put to your face is not disclosed, I want people to know and be able to make an informed decision.

Probably the majority of people in the below support group were damaged, some very severly, due to IPL.

They also call motorcycles donorcycles? Have you ever noticed that people in high stress jobs and also those of certain religions, ethnicity's, sexual orientation are the ones that tell the most warped jokes? I know people very well that joke about very serious things, my OB who is still a dear friend has known me since I was born and he was 6, well when I was 8 month pregnant with my first he told me a horrible joke by most peoples standards. He knows me and I laughed, I wasn't offended in the least you know why? I have a sense of humor and he's human and we joke!

If you stop and think about it.. really, a laser to your face isn't dangerous?! I'm glad you and your daughters had a good outcome but just know there are plenty of people who haven't. I had V-Beam and was burned, so I immediately knew I was injured. However, with some of these devices, the damage isn't apparant until a couple of months later or even a year out. Many IPL victims experience fat loss and don't realize this until a couple months post procedure. It's been noted, especially with Fraxel, that damage can be quite delayed, sometimes even a year later. These horror stories are real- ipl/lasers can be devastating to people's faces and lives. Don't be fooled into thinking because they are used everywhere, they are safe. These devices were grandfathered into the FDA approval process and the FDA doesn't acknowledge the numerous complaints against them. Please see this link, it's a list of some of the many complaints filed to the FDA http://iplandlaserdamagesupport.prophpbb.com/topic344.html

If you continue to choose this form of treatment, I wish you the best of luck. I just feel people should be better informed because
the dangers are well concealed by the industry, Dr.'s and FDA.

I do not know about these lasers, but I know you can have problems and damage from ever regular medical treatments, dentists who do not do their job properly (happened to me a few years ago),doctors who screw up other surgeries.

Even Kanye West's mother-she died during cosmetic surgery a year or two ago-that was in the media a long time ago too.

The trouble with internet forums is that people in general are more apt to complain about something - you tend not to hear from satisfied people. That's the trouble with realself.com - it doesn't matter which procedure you research, the amount of negative comments is frightening. I was thinking of trying Sculptra some time ago, but when I read all the horror stories on realself I got put off.

EDS has its fair share of calamities too - we've had someone burn their tongue using an LED, even though her mouth was closed, someone whose cheek was burned and caused a scar. We've had someone whose face collapsed by doing facial exercises for about two weeks, we've had someone alter the shape of their nose by doing the Tanaka massage three times, we've had people ruin their skin with copper peptides - I could go on and on.

The fact of the matter is that thousands of people get thousands of laser treatments all over the world. Most of them are happy with the results. And consider how many laser treatments celebrities get, they have numerous treatments a year to keep their skin looking good. Also, look how popular laser hair removal has become. If these devices were truly dangerous and causing harm I'm sure that the relative government bodies would have stepped in by now.

Further to my ramblings above: I'd just like to tell you what happened to me when I had my upper and lower bleph. I had an allergic reaction to the cream the doctor gave me to put into my eyes after surgery. But I didn't realise it. The sorer my eyes became, the more cream I used and, of course, the worse my condition became. Eventually, my eyes had blown up like two giant tomatoes. I went back to the doctor and he gave me some cortisone cream. Things did not improve. I could barely see. I went back to the doctor who immediately got his nurse to escort me to an eye specialist. The eye specialist gave me some medication and things gradually improved. But when I was fully healed I had a pleat under my left eye. Back to the doctor again. He said, give it some time and it will improve. Six months later, no improvement. Back to the doctor. He then said he would have to perform another operation. Three months later, no improvement. Back to the doctor. He operated again. To this day, I'm still not totally happy with the results.

HOWEVER, when anyone on the Forum has asked about information on getting eye surgery - I have always encouraged them to do so. Why? Because I think it's the best thing I've ever done for myself - regardless of the drama I went through. I could have chosen to take a totally negative track and told everyone, "Never get eye surgery" - but I have never done that. Yes, I was unlucky. But I would never dissuade people from pursuing eye surgery if that's what they want to do. What I have told them is to thoroughly research their surgeon.

I totally understand where you're coming from Keliu, but I personally know SO many people who's lives were turned upside down due to an IPL or laser injury. If it were just a matter of finding the best surgeon, I wouldn't be discouraging at all. However, ipl/lasers are devices that can and do malfunction and that has nothing to do with the skill of the physician/RN/aesthetician. I'm just trying to get the information out there and help people to understand that they aren't always the "lunch-time" procedures they are made out to be..

Annie,

I see this subject is very near and dear to your heart so rather than give other examples ad nauseum I would like in all sincerity to ask a genuine question.

Can you provide statistics on the percentage of bad versus good results with these procedures?

I want to reiterate I am asking with all due respect and not a shred of animosity. Smile

Thanks

I wish we did have an exact percentage. The problem is many, if not most, who have been damaged are denied by the clinic that caused it. All of the people I know who have suffered ipl/laser damage have gone back to their Dr. or aesthetician to discuss what happened and were told it could not be. Therefore, how could we possibly get an accurate number? Lasers are big business and Dr.'s have alot of money wrapped up in them, so generally they will not admit to problems.
The FDA is aware of the many, many problems with these devices, unfortunately, they have failed to act on it. Here is a link, though, to direct you to some of the many complaints filed to the FDA.

I hate disagree with anyone, but I have to say that Ultherapy was only a little painful. I just had the treatment at Radiance Medspa in Avon, CT 860-409-9000. I've been going there for years and the people/clinicians are truly wonderful.

I was hesitant to get Ultherapy from the posting I saw on this website about how painful it was. I went anyway. I had it yesterday...and the pain was no more than a 4 out of 10..and it was only a 4 for some of the time. Most of it was a 2 or 3 out of 10. As far as pain management during the procedure, I only took 800 mg of Ibuprofen.

Seriously, if you are afraid to do it because of the pain...it is not that bad AT ALL! The results after treatment were VERY encouraging. My neck was tighter and my cheeks were a bit higher. I had redness and very little swelling. Most of the redness is gone today, but a bit remains. I have no tingling or any other side affects. If you are thinking about it....GO FOR IT!! Very Happy

What you're experiencing immediately after treatment is a post inflammatory response and not results. Inflammation will make anyone's face feel and look tighter. The objective of Ultherapy is to spur collagen to build after a period of time which doesn't happen within days of the procedure, this takes months which is why your provider wants you to come back after 3 months time to check your progress and sometimes will suggest another round of Ultherapy.
I don't know if this is due to the provider not explaining things in full detail or the patient not willing to accept how Ultherapy works, but I really wish people would stop touting results due to inflammation within days of the procedure when it is scientifically impossible to achieve any collagen rebuilding in that short amount of time. It is these people that are giving others curious at trying this procedure false hopes with post inflammitory reactions fading in a few weeks. Come back after you've given Ultherapy months to do what it is supposed to do, only then can you give a fair honest review of it.

I will, however, agree that with my sister, the pain was not unbearable when she had hers done and she had nothing administered prior to the procedure. But everyone has a different level of pain tolerance.
