Thanks for sharing this JonnyNJ. I had heard of this being done years ago and stay away from using my remote while at shopping malls. Thieves will use this technique to break into cars at malls quite often. It's good to be reminded that it can happen elsewhere as well. |

I wonder how easy or common it might be to steal or code a garage door opener signal. I try not to think about things like this because I find it unsettling. If I were to worry about all of the 'could happens' I would make myself crazy.
Locking my car manually is simple. My garage door is another story. I live by myself in a 4 bedroom, 2 floor house on 1 1/2 acres set back far from the road and hidden by tress. However, I have four dogs who have excellent hearing, very loud voices, and sharp teeth.
Is there anyone here who has ever thought about owning a gun or who actually owns one? |

Yes, I have read the link. I think that the point of the snopes commentary is that it is important to be aware of the possibilities.
For example, devices currently exist which are able to steal the remote control code for garage door openers.
With technology changing so rapidly and with the ingenuity that thieves have,it is always just a matter of time. Also, it often takes time for law enforcement to catch onto the connections between crimes. |

I'm totally against owning guns. |

Owning a gun is more likely to hurt yourself than a potential thief. Life can be scary out there but guns are the problem, not the solution. |

In all my years of driving a car, never have I locked my doors, nor do I leave attractive items in sight. I just don't lock my car doors. I see it this way. Locking it only perpetuates the act of a break in and I don't even think about the possibility of a break in. I'm going on trust and good faith. So far good. |

I noticed that many people don't lock their car doors in the small communities we've visited whilst on holiday in Canada. I envy them greatly.
Unfortunately, we live a few miles away from a city which is blighted by drug crimes. You definitely need to lock your doors and never, ever leave anything in your car, not even an obviously empty cheap old sunglasses case. Even then, thieves will try to break in, and if you park on the city streets you risk (as has happened to us a few times) your windows being smashed by would-be thieves. They are so desperate for money to buy drugs that they'll break-in in any case. |

I have major b parked in huge cities without locking and leaving stuff around in my car and have not had break ins to my vehicle or damage to it. The general population is instilling the fear or perpetuating it by talking about it, you will get back from the universe, whatever you talk about. |

I lived in a rather rural area where you could leave not only your car unlocked but your front door!
Where I live now and it's fairly upscale, you have to be crazy to leave anything unlocked.
Bad things do happen to good people, it's not all about Karma, there is a very heavily drug infested area not very far away and yes drugs lead to crime.
I still have a large SUV and check all the time to make sure nobody has climbed into my car and is hiding just waiting to do god knows what? |

Jonny...I (we) own guns and have all of our lives. Being educated in the proper handling, size and storage of a gun is key. You being out so far and alone would concern me. I don't know about you but, where we live there are "critters" and coming upon them can be dangerous. Having protection is a wise idea.
Also, as far as locking cars...it's just a small but sometimes effective deterant to keep someone from taking your radio, nav system, radar or even hot wiring it and driving off. I live in a city that has been listed for many years as one of the top 10 safest and best places to raise a family. That said...people that have parked and locked their cars out on the street or in their drive ways at night have woken up to their cars on cinder blocks and all 4 tires and wheels missing. This has happened over 100 times in the past 6 months. These guys are fast and organized and no one ever hears a sound while they are doing it.
I guess it is like locking your house doors and windows. It just makes it a little bit harder and less convenient for a thief than an open door. JMO! |

Having had younger kids when living more out in the boonies (when I did) I wouldn't own a gun, but had 2 sometimes 3 rotties who were big sweeties with people we introduced them to, but Lord help any stranger trying to break into my house.
I didn't have the dangerous critters of the 4 legged variety! |

If I do buy a gun, which I may do I will take some courses in gun care and also go to a shooting range and learn to shoot.
Aside from break-ins, there are bears, foxes, and wolves here. Although no one has been hurt yet, a bear did go up onto my neighbors deck. That is far too close for me. I had a six foot chain link fence with reinforced top and bottom rails installed around the back of the house last fall. It covers an area of 40ft away from the house and is 100ft wide. A bear can rip his way through it but I think that there will be enough noise that the dogs will hear the ruckus. Barking dogs are supposed to be a deterrent to bears.
My biggest concern is a break-in. Neither of my next door neighbors is close and the house across the street is far away also. When there are leaves on the trees it is difficult to even see my next door neighbor's houses. Dogs help with security but they can be shot. I figure at that point, it's them first and me second. |

I wish it just was scare-talk, SusieQ, but we've had 2 attempted and 1 successful break-ins when we've left our car on our drive outside our house, plus the window has been smashed in 3 times when parking in the city. Many neighbouring houses and cars have also been burgled. And I know for sure that muggings happen in the small town near us as I happen to know some of the victims.
I've seen people with guns wrestled to the ground in broad daylight in the city centre, and we narrowly missed hitting one of 3 men who were stoned out of their heads and staggered into the road last weeked - luckily, we were driving fairly slowly at the time.
No matter how nice your are and how well you think of others, some bad things can happen. Thankfully, there are also a lot of good people who live around us, but I think you'd get a heck of a shock if you tried living here, SusieQ. I certainly did when I moved here as it was completely unexpected - I originally came from a rural, pretty safe village. There's no way that I "talked" it into happening! |

Sorry to hear about the break ins majorb. I agree persons have to be vigilant and crimes indeed do happen because everyone talks about it, so what do we get, more of the same. If only the general population would just think the other way.....it really does work. |

I really love that I don't have to lock my front door or car. This even though I actually live in a city!
Years ago we used to park our car overnight on the street and we realized that someone was obviously sleeping in our car. But since they didn't damage or trash it, we kept leaving it unlocked.
I'm from Canada and we don't usually own guns. Personally, I obviously do not agree with the US relaxed gun laws. |

In Australia, we don't have the right to own a gun either (except for under special circumstances) - IMO it makes for a much better and safer society. I don't understand the US attitude to guns at all. |

As said, that email is a hoax. Snopes said it's possible for that sort of thievery to occur, but it isn't likely. |

Interesting, I'm also from Canada but I know plenty of people who own guns.
Mostly it's hunting rifles, but I know quite a few people with handguns as well. |
