I have a question about tanning in a tanning salon.
I happen to be very white and i think that my skin is more white than most white people.
So i would like to get tanned. Tanning in sun is no option where i live as it is like - 40 in winter and in summer, it is hard to see sun with a lot of rain and clouds.
I tried tanning in a salon for 20 minutes and it did something but went away as i never went back.
My mom tells me not to do this again as it is dangerous for skin and health.
So my question is: Is it true that salon tanning is bad for skin and can cause skin diseases and cancer? There is a nice salon in my area where they have a stand up tanning bed, it is pretty cool, but not sure if it is safe.
Any advice? I notice that most girls today are tanned, and a lot of them go to tanning salons.
Thanks

I have not used a sunbed for years and evn before that only very very occasionaly. I would never use one again and I think the safest way to tan your skin is with false tan. There are lots of great ones around that are really really easy to apply. |

I agree with rachel, uva and uvb both cause sun damage, either through skin cancer or premature ageing. This has some good info on tanning...

I would definitely avoid the tanning bed, Elmo. Instead go for a fake tan cream (yes, cream that gives you a tan for a few days). Most of them are easy to apply but I bet your local beauty salon does these as well. I know it's a bit tedious to reapply it every few days but your skin will thank you in the future for chosing a fake tan over a tanning bed! |

I used to use tanning beds a lot. They did 2 things to me:
1. gave me a the begining of wrinkles @ 23
2. Ruined my eyesight. Even with goggles on I can't take any glare anymore.
on the plus it honestly did help keep away the zits. but I'd rather zits than wrinkles. |

Elmo,
I have very very fair skin, too, but I would never go near a tanning bed. It was explained to me once that you get all the harmful rays without any of the protective ones that you get from the sun. This sort of tanning can increase your risk for skin cancers and it might do a real number on your skin, causing premature aging/wrinkles. As others have suggested, a fake tan or perhaps some bronzing powder is really the way to go. After years of envying my tanned peers I have learned to really appreciate it. I find fair skin quite beautiful as it can accentuate your hair and eye colors quite nicely.
