With an aim to smooth the frown lines and laugh lines,i used retin-a as I found out it is collagen inducing. It's been a year since I included retin-a in my daily beauty regime. I first started by applying retin-a topically followed by moisturiser. Flaking and breakout was not as serious as i first anticipated. After a not-so-serious flaking stage, it was like i was given a new layer of skin, dead skin cells were removed and my skin looks "raw" and sheer. After 3 months, I mixed retin-a in my moisturizer until now. And i don't see it does much to my frown lines on my forehead. Collagen inducing ? Seems a bit so and it effectively helps to shed off dead skin cells. Con is the minor flaking always leave scar and spot on my face, make me look like i am always on the recovery side after a serious breakout. So should i continue or quit? Thought of switching to less irritating stuff eg gel plus. I want something which does not cause flaking at all, any recommendation? Thx... |

Why don't you just cut back on the frequency of use? Just use it every other day, or every two days. And/or cut back on strength. |

I agree with Keliu. I've been using retin A micro gel for 1 year - every couple of nights works well for me but I still experience flaking too. I've seen a big improvement in my skin and fine lines around my eyes and forehead. I would definitely continue using - I think its the best thing out there besides surgery. |

I mix a pea size of 0.1 retin-a cream into about 10ml of my daily moisturizer. I use it every other night before bedtime. Flaking is not so serious but it does occur and leaves spots and marks that take so long to fade and that's I hate most. More, I have oily skin. The oil glands keep producing oil that would eventually turn into milia and stuck on my skin. I once thought retin-a can purge out dirt for good during the early stage of use. In my situation, my face was once thoroughly cleared but it comes back though not as serious. The flaking seems unable to end. |

Why not switch to .05%?
The cream can definitely cause clogged pores. The gel may be a better option for you but it can pretty harsh too. Atralin is another great option. The base is very nice, its .05% tretinoin.
I've read many times, after 6 months, that you really only need to use every 3rd day for it to still be effective (for anti-aging). Since you have been using a year I'd definitely cut back on the usage. |

How about switching over the Retin A Micro in the lowest strength, which is time released and should be gentler to your skin. After 1 year of nightly use, you can cut down to 3 times a week and maintain your results.
Have you tried applying the Retin A first and waiting for 1 hour before applying your moisturizer?
Another option, you could always try the short contact treatment of applying RA, leaving it on an hour or so and then cleansing it off, apply moisturizer.
And the last thing I can think of is moving down to an over the counter retinol or retinaldehyde product.
Just some thoughts for you to consider! |

I use my retin-a alternately with a glycolic acid based serum. The two seem to be complimenting each other but I don't dare putting one on top of each other on the same night. So maybe you can try alternating retin a with someone else too. |

I started using a clarsonic about six months after starting retin a. I was amazed at how it exfoliated the dry peeling skin. It almost seemed like my skin stopped peeling.
Then...I'd notice dry flaky skin on days when I was without or forgot to use my clarsonic.
I consider my clarsonic the reason I can continue retin a with ease. |

For dealing with the residual flaking you may want to use a gentle enzyme peel with papaya or pumpkin. EDS offers a couple.
Others (like Natalyn mentions) get rid of the flakies with glycolic or lactic. This may not work on sensitive skin. It does help me.
One thing mentioned in your post is that the flakes are leaving scars and spots on your skin. That sounds unusual to me. The flakies aren't usually that deep. Maybe you should try putting the retin A on a little lighter (not so much cream). |

Why would you mix retin a with your moisturizer? It should be applied to clean dry skin for maximum effectiveness. If you are getting irritated then reduce the frequency. It is the best product out there for remodeling skin so I would continue using it. Greg |

I think the same thing. Mixing Retin A with moisturizer is not a way to have all benefit Retin A can give. I think that all you can induce is never ending irritation without any results.
I just pass over my first year of nightly using Retin A. No mixing moisturizers, nothing...just Retin A every night on clean dry skin. First couple of months I experienced some flaking and I gave up of using it on my decollete. It was to itchy.... I really don't have any serious deep wrinkles at all, but I have few on the both side of neck and around mouths and those are diminished for 80% in past year of using Retin A. They are still here, but almost invisible Whole skin looks better and brighter and I think that some lifting effect also happened ... let me say about 40% .
So I don't even think about it to stop using Retin A now, in despite...I am doubled the amount of cream (two peas size instead of one). And I am planning to buy derma roller to complete a fight with sagging and to prevent wrinkles. |

So Retin A can be used for Wrinkle issue?? I have been used Retin A with Obagi for my freckles for almost three years now but not for my wrinkles. I don't see any improvement on my wrinkles under my eyes. It seems like I have more wrinkles under my eyes.
why? |

I have been using Retin A cream in the past and I always had flaky skin and I was not getting much result on clogged pores and on the little with heads. Even if I would get glycolic peals the white heads and clogged pores kept coming back.
Now I use Retin A micro 0.04% every other night. One time for short contact (3 to 4 hours) and the other time all night long. I always moisturised before and the short contact night I use a night crème after. All the nights I don’t use Retin A I don’t moisturised at all. I only use DR. H Regenerating Serum (as recomended with Dr. H). That works well for me no Flaking and no more clogged pores, white and black heads. |

Have you tried that Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) discussed in other threads on the site? Check it out. Perhaps do that and still use your retin A at night. I bet you'd have great results.
Good Luck. |

Oh recently I DIY my make up remover cleansing oil by adding emulsifier to grape seed oil. Yeah, it works sosososo good and has helped clear up blemishes on my face. I hope that would collaborate well with my retin-a treatment. |

Guess you really know how I feel. It's the unstoppable oil that cause minor breakout and then flaking. I feel retin-a tends to dry up the top layer of a pimple but do not clear up the mess underneath. I plan to switch to OTC retinol products, dunno how well it could work as compared to high strength retin-a cream.

I think the reason you have not seen results on wrinkles is because the Obagi system is causing the wrinkles that retin a is trying to fix. I would give up the Obagi and find a good cleanser and just use the retin a. Greg |
