I'm only 23 and my skin is in almost good shape.
However, I have a permanent tan, and my skin doesn't seem as supple/smooth/strong and bright anymore and I'd like to find a cheap method of dealing with this. I've tried exfoliating, SPF everyday, MSM and moisturizing etc - it's helped lift up the shade a level, but I don't have the fair skin I used to have as a child.
I heard a daily exfoliant like Retin-a not only would help me lighten up the permanent tan, reveal new fresh skin, but also reverse skin damage.
However, I heard it's not good to go in the sun, but if you only go to the beach twice or three times a year in the summer time wearing high SPF, and the other 363 days you stay out of the sun, would this be ok?
And what are all the other alternatives to reverse sun damage, remove a tan/lighten your skin back to your original color, and just make it look nice and youthful, besides Retin-A? That isn't so strict with the sun guidelines etc. |

The beach a few times a year (using high SPF with stable UVA protection, hats, covering up etc) should be fine.
All products that lighten skin tone will make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. So whatever you use, the above protection methods will be required. |

Have you thought about using vitamin C to lighten skin tone rather then retin a. Retin a takes a lot of patience and care. Getting sun burnt is not an option while on retin a or at any time for that matter. Vitamin C can help to lighten skin tone, assist with skin damage repair and help to prevent future damage. Just a thought. |

lovemore do you mean just on your face? Is your body tanned also?
There are some great products on the market for the body as well as the face to keep your skin looking soft and supple and to repair any damage that may have been caused from previous sun exposure.
Dermalogica make a great product for the body, Dermalogica Multivitamin Body Block spf20. It contains Shea Butter, Oil of Primrose, Pro-vitamin B5, Vitamin's A, C and E to treat past damage and to treat areas prone to aging. I use this everyday and I must say it leaves my skin so wonderfully soft. It also helps with pigmentation on the body and with dry skin.
If your looking for a great product for the face
Md Formulations make a Vit-A-Plus Illuminating Serum that targets pigmentation, brown patches and aging. Also Clarins make a White Plus Brightening Regime to target browning, pigmentation etc and to generally brighten your complexion.
Also if you use Retinol, vitamin A or C you need to wear a sunscreen as your skin can become sensitized to the sun and burn all that more easily.
I do think that the only way to really keep your skin healthy is to stay out of the sun as much as possible and to wear a sunscreen everyday regardless of the weather because you can still cause damage to your skin even if it is overcast and cloudy.
You can still go to the beach as long as you cover up and protect your skin as best you can to stop anymore sun damage from occurring. |
