Hi All!
I'm writing about this because when I was considering trying OCM (oil cleansing method) I read a lot about it online, including on this site. Most of what I read was very encouraging, but then when I got here I read a few horror stories that really freaked me out. Since I'd already started, though, I figured "in for a penny, in for a pound" and I sallied forth with the program. Here are my results!
Okay so for background, I have oily skin with blackheads, especially on my nose. Well, I guess my nose, my chin, and my cheeks. Sometimes my forehead. I used Dr Hauschka for a few years and loved loved loved it, but then two things happened: I moved from the desert to the east coast and my skin changed quite a bit, and, my finances changed and Dr H started to seem cost-prohibitive. Seemed like it was time for me to try something new.
OCM seemed like the perfect thing for me to try for 3 reasons: 1, it’s cheap. 2, it’s natural and 3, I am not afraid of putting oils on my skin – Dr H made a believer out of me when it comes to turning off the oil pumps by applying more oil.
I dove in with a 25/75 mix of castor and EVOO, twice a day. The blackheads didn’t go away, and I got these two weird patches on my cheeks of dry skin, and one had an angry pimple in the middle of it. Then I got some more pimples, even as my skin continued to dry out. My pores looked bigger than ever, gross. This went on for about 3 days.
I decided to reduce the castor oil % because of the dryness, so I added grapeseed to the mix. I have some age spots (I’m 39) and had read that grapeseed could help even out the tone. The dry patches stopped being so dry but the blackheads and pimples remained. Also, even though the patches were no longer dry and flaking, they remained visible – it was like a circle of blackheads with a red pimple in the middle. My pores remained huge. This went on for about 2 more days.
I had job interviews and couldn’t walk around with huge oily pores, so I started using witch hazel morning and night, after the OCM. But then my face felt dry so I started rubbing grapeseed on after the witch hazel. Not the whole OCM mix, just grapeseed. Success!
My pores grew smaller and smaller and I noticed way fewer blackheads. The pimples went away (but the left cheek kept its weird circle of blackheads). I decided to try reducing my OCM to once per day, in my morning shower, and then just witch hazel at night. I also started adding more castor oil to my OCM mix. Success again!
It’s now been about 3 weeks since I started. My pores are invisible, I have no blackheads, no pimples, and my skin feels amazingly soft and conditioned. My age spots are fading (slightly). Even usually oblivious husband has commented on how great my skin looks.
I’ve landed on a winning formula for me: 30/40/30 mix of castor, EVOO, and grapeseed oil OCM in the shower once a day, followed by witch hazel, then a light coat of grapeseed oil. At night, I rinse my face, apply witch hazel (twice, once to get major dirt off and once to fine tune), followed by another light coat of grapeseed.
I guess my point is that experimentation is key. It’s only been a few weeks, so who knows, maybe my success is only temporary. But for right now, I’m very happy with my decision to go natural and try OCM. Good luck and best wishes! |

OCM is great but it can definitely be trial and error to find the right mix of what will work for you.
I'm glad you were able to determine a routine that works for you. |

Welcome eliza383!!
I'm glad you've found a good mix of oils, and also glad you've mentioned the grape seed oil... I have a bottle in the cupboard that I bought on a whim and then have never tried out!!! Soooo, after reading your post I'm going to try it out at last. |
