Hello,
For the past several years I have been using a sunscreen that contained Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide which I heard were the best UVA/UVB protectors.
However, recently I heard that the very best filters especially for UVA (the wrinle causing rays) were ingredients called Mexoryl or Tinosorb. I'm confused. Does this mean that what I was using did not offer any protection from the sun? What products offer Mexoryl or Tinosorb filters. Are they really the best UVA/UVB filters. Help!!!

This is a great question leeleedeedee,
Some background information about those ingredients;

Mexoryl SX - Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid

It was invented in Laboratories of L'Oreal as the first in 1993. It is water-soluble and protects from UVB and UVA. Proved its best performance in protecting from UVA II.

Mexoryl XL Drometrizole Trisiloxane
It was invented in 1999. It is a newer and better version of Mexoryl SX. Chemists were searching for better protection from UVA I and eventually came up with Mexoryl XL which is also oil soluble.

Both of them are photo-stable and they are usually used together; plus they are mixed with other chemical and mineral filters in cosmetics. Mexoryl is never used alone because as they say, it is only good for the certain spectrum of UVB and UVA but not as good for other spectrums of harmful UVB and UVA rays. That is where Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Parsol 1789 (Avobenzone), and Tinosorb kics in to fill the gap. (Assuming that there will be a sunscreen in the future containing mixture of all of them).
So far Mexoryl, up to my knowledge, is not FDA approved in US and Canada and not used in any cosmetics in our market. It is rumored that it is on its way to FDA approval though.
