My background in chemistry is telling me that, practically, there is little difference between the two, at least in terms of physical qualities.
I was looking at reviews for squalane oil and someone commented that it was the consistency of baby oil, then it clicked in my head that mineral oil = long saturated hydrocarbons chains, and squalane oil = long saturated hydrocarbon chains. I poked around the net a bit and couldn't find anything that was pure squalene oil.
I can't decide now if I want to pay a comparably hefty price for what might just be glorified mineral oil. Anyone here use squalane? |

I don't think these are similar at all. Mineral Oil is from petroleum, squalene is derived from shark or olives.
Squalene has some antioxidants properties and can moisturize the skin. Mineral oil is pretty much an inert ingredients IMO. It doesn't penetrate the skin. It only acts a protectant and can help to hold in moisture but doesn't moisturize alone. I'm not saying Mineral Oil is bad, it definitely has it uses. I always have some around. |

I actually find squaline's texture slightly lighter/thinner than mineral oil or baby oil. As far as purity here is one that's 97.9% pure, it's made from olives so what impurities, we consume extra virgin olive oil?

I couldn't find squalene anywhere but in nutritional capsules. Squalene and squalane are different, squalene is full of double bonds and squalane has none, which does make a difference in its physical properties (has to do with the rigidity of the molecule). The organic structural components of mineral and squalane oil are very similar, like the same lego blocks arranged in slightly different ways.
There must be other components of the lipids in squalane that make it moisturizing. |

When I've used mineral oil in the past, it just sat on top of my skin, sticky and greasy. Squalane disappears in an instant. |

I know mineral oil is supposed to be bad but I find Vaseline is good at moisturizing the dry skin on my hands and legs. Vaseline makes my hands and legs silky smooth I could say LOL |
