I've been usig .05% Retin A creme since early April. Recently I went back to alternating with the Walgreens Alpha Hydroxy acid that so many raved about on an earlier thread.
In the mornings after the AHA, my skin looks sort of soft and dewey but never on the mornings after the Retin A. I know I am developing a preference but probably for the wrong reasons. I'm sure the Retin A is probably better but I find myself cheating on the Retin A with my new love, AHA
Have any of you stopped using Retin A in lieu of the AHA products. I hate my Retin A nights. It's a lot more difficult to apply, I never feel like I've put on enough, when I do put on too much my skin sure tells me in a big way lately (dry winter weater) and the AHA is just so easy. |

I can't speak to the AHA but using Retin A in the winter is never pleasant. All I can tell you is, the payoff from using RA will be far greater in the long run, than using AHA's. That is why it's at the top of the list when it comes to preventing the signs of aging. The side effects you see, is the RA working its magic. |

bordynf12, you could try a lower strength RA...less side effects yet still getting the anti-aging benefits. |

I manage to not have problems with the RA generally but have to be very careful with application. Every now and then I mess up and my neck or some part of my face pays the consequences. Next time I order, I think I might go to the lower percentage. As long as it's the superior product I will not switch but I really love the AHA. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Some thoughts:
AHA is good for dry skin because it (esp. lactic acid, I think) helps the skin hold on to moisture. That's probably why your skin looks so good the next morning.
Maybe the frequent AHA is helping your RA penetrate deeper, in which case a lower strength may help out. Retin A every other night is sufficient for many people.
Maybe you could try some thing to help your skin hold onto more water on the RA nights: a humidifier, a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, or other bland moisturizer that you're already used to.
Cheers,
Kay |

Thanks Kay. I never put anything over my Retin A for fear of diluting the effects but I'm thinking that I will take your suggestion going forward and after waiting an hour apply one of my moisturizers that are fairly generic just to combat the dryness. I just wish I loved my Retin A like I love my AHA. |

You could try using the Retin A at night and the AHA in the morning. |

Thanks jom. I'll be trying changing my routine a bit to be able to still get the benefits of retin a along with incorporating the AHA, possibly at day time or ever other night along with adding a moisturizer over the retin a after waiting an hour.
Does anyone know if I can use the AHA after my DIY C Serum or will it inactivate my C? |

I have used the AHA over a C serum with no problems. AHA doesn't deactivate your C at all. |

I like to use Lipsome Encapsulated Retinol. It gives me all the benefits of Retin-A without the irritation and dryness. |

This is what I do. I use alpha hydrox retinol night resq in the a.m. followed by sunscreen, and retin a .025% gel at night. After about an hour, I moisturize with CeraVe PM mixed with a drop or 2 of HA. |

Interesting. Is that because they are both acids? I generally use LacSal (lactic acid/salicylic acid) at night but next week start my Cosmetic Skin Solutions CE Ferrulic or whatever it's called on half my face, as an experiment, but maybe I should use both products on half my face just to see the difference, if any. Any opinions? |
