Does anyone know a good alternative to retin a?
I've been using it for a couple years now and I feel that it has not really done anything significant to my skin. Granted I am still young but it seemed to have made my skin more dry. And I still get acne on my forehead
I would like to know if there is something else I can use that will give me anti aging benefits and keep my skin clear
thanks |

Are you using retin-a cream or gel? If its the cream, it really isn't best for acne prone bu the gel is pretty harsh since its alcohol based.
I use Tazorac(tazarotene)cream. I love it so much better then retin-a. It works for my acne and it didn't irritate my skin like retin-a did (although taz is considered stronger).
You could also consider Atralin, its .05% tretinoin. Its in a less irritating based then retin-a IMO and is indicated for acne.
And the gentlest in this category is Differin (Adapalene). This did not work for me but its certainly worth considering. It does have some anti-agigng benefits also but not comparable to tretinoin/taz. |

You might want to try Green cream, which whilst not as strong as Retin A, is a retinol based prodcut so can produce similar results. It comes in 3 strengths, and is a lovely cream. I'm a long term user of Retin A, and one time I had one of my sister in laws wanting to try it, but Retin A really aggravated her skin, so we tried Green Cream and she's been using it some 4 years now (at the highest strength). She could move to Retin A, but as she says if its not broke why fix it. |

I am using the gel from ADC, and it doesn't seem to do anything for acne. I'm wondering if its really retin-a.
Can I get a generic form of Tazorac or Green cream from an online site? |

ADC sells Tazret (tazarotene). I use the US brand. I know the base is different then in the US brand.
Green cream is OTC. Its has a high alcohol content but if your skin is ok with that, its defiantly worth a try. Many seem to like it. I'd just google it to try to find the best price. |

Since the base is different does it make it less effective for some people? |

Another OTC option is something with retinal(dehyde). Retinal is stronger than retinol in some sense, and Avene has several products containing it: Triacneal geared specifically for acne (a remake of Diacneal, with glycolic acid too), and the Eluage and Retrinal lines for anti-aging. |

Generally speaking, no I don't think so. What most important is that the active is the same. |

With the green cream, what level should I start off with since I have been using Retin A for a while now. A year |

They say level 6 from memory is the equivalent to 0.5% Retin A, but I would suggest not to start with that. Like most things there is an adaption period that needs to happen. When I tried it (and I've used Retin A for a v long time now) I purged like no tomorrow on the switch, and when I backed down to the Level 3 - it was fantastic. I didn't continue with it, just because it was a hassle for me to get it, and I see my derm regularly enough so it didn't really deliver any benefits for me.

I couldn't even use level 3 green cream more than once a week but i was using .05 renova from the first day without any irritation. They are totally different products so start off with the lowest leve which i think is 3 until you are sure your skin can handle it. Greg |
