Just thought this might be of interest to some, just in keeping up with what's going on in the industry. It's an article from Paula Begoune's Beauty Bulletin.
THE SKIN CARE SCOOP
Sculptra
Sculptra is a relatively new dermal filler recently approved by the FDA to
restore or correct facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people with human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, but it is also being considered for
general cosmetic corrective use for wrinkles and sagging (Source: FDA News,
P04-76, August 3, 2004,www.fda.gov).
Dermal fillers are a range of both synthetic and natural materials that are
injected directly into wrinkles or depressed parts of the face to "plump" or
"fill" out these areas with the goal of creating a more youthful appearance.
Technically, Sculptra is non-animal-derived poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which
makes it distantly related to alpha hydroxy acids. Outside of the United
States (Sculptra is marketed under the trade name New-Fill) it has been used
in 30 countries as a dermal filler for several years and has also been used
for more than 20 years as a component of dissolvable sutures.
What makes Sculptra unique in comparison to other dermal fillers is that it
works on depressed or sagging areas of skin and not just to fill in wrinkles
or make lips look fuller. Results are not immediate and usually require
multiple, biweekly treatments. It can last up to two years but usually
requires touch-ups to maintain results (Sources: American Academy of
Dermatology,www.aad.org; Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, July--August 2004,
pages 385-389; and American Society of Plastic Surgeons,
www.plasticsurgery.org).

I've been interested in Sculptra for a couple of years now, but wanted to see just how it rated among doctors and patients over time before committing to it. When I discussed it with my botox/IPL doc., she suggested I contact a plastic surgeon for more information and data. Because I've had some less than lovely results with fillers, I'd want to be really sure of the skill and experience of the person injecting it and that the filler could be directed into exactly the right location.
Sculptra sounds like a very useful product, especially if one has noticeable facial volume loss (or if fat pads have decided to move to a new neighbourhood, like they have on my face). Also, since it takes several sessions to achieve the desired results, I would think there was less chance of screw-up. After all, it is supposed to last up to two years and I'd want to spend that time looking good, instead of looking swollen in all the wrong places.
I'm gearing myself up for another consultation and will probably be making my filler choice soon, 'cause birthday #55 is dogging my heels. Yikes! |

It looks very interesting, doesnt it. There is a poster here who injected it herself, and was very pleased with the results. |

Oh, Lordy -- injects herself... (Okay, my peripheral vision is starting to go and I'm seeing black spots in front of me... head between the knees NOW!) |
