Just wondering what products people with acne have had success using to improve their skin.
I find I try something for 4 months and it's great and then my skin goes back to nasty.
Best so far was Darphin purifying cleanser, purifying toner and natural regulating fluid. I used it for a year but now that I'm in school the price is too high.
Had good results with decleor for a while but now that's not working...(no more blackheads, fewer zits, but larger painful ones.
What's eveyone else used and liked? |

I've had great success with the Dr. Hauschka line. Admittedly, my breakouts were rather mild by the time I started this, but it has helped a lot with breakouts and with redness.
When my skin was much worse years ago, my best discovery were those little loofah face pads. Scrubbing every day made a remarkable improvement. |

I tried scrubbing/exfoliating more but it didn't help because my skin is sensitive and dehydrated. I've thought about Dr. H, and a few zillion other brands. I like to hear what's worked for people before trying... |

I've been so plagued with breakouts- it seems like so much of my life...not SO bad as cyctic acne and red all over, but it seemed like I'd always had a couple pimples many times around my chin area for the past I don't know...10 years! Very frustrating. Especially when it started scarring. Tried everything. I couldn't have told you any thing helped much...cutting out sugar did help a bit...but nothing drastic that kept working until MSM...
MSM
MSM
MSM
two words: The Way.
You can't overdose, it's a natural component of skin, collagen, joints, hair etc...If I were you I'd not walk but RUN to the health store and give it a shot...
For what it's worth..
Good Luck!

I have the same problem as Dana described, not very bad as acne or redness goes, but always have a few pimples around my cheek. Using MD Forte cleanser with DDF clay mask helped to control the breakouts, however, there was this one or two would just never go away. In my last business trip, I accidentally found that Yonka Gel Nettoyant works excellent. I have no breakouts for the last week. My other theory is ... maybe I was using too many products at once. With all the purchase and samples I got, I probably overworked my skin. So, instead of helping and relaxing, I actually tortured my skin. In the last trip, I didnt use much skin care stuff except the cleanser and lotion.
But, long story short, I now highly recommend Yonka Gel Nettoyant for the acne control. |

Dana,
what is MSM??
Happygirl163,
Unfortunately Yonka Gel Nettoyant did not agree with my skin. I tried to use it to clean my brushes after realizing it was giving me blackheads, but that didn't work for me either.
Chimera,
I recently read a few posts about dr H making people's acne really bad on initial use, did this happen to you at all? |

Lianne -- it only gave me some very mild breakouts on my jaw line, but those have since disappeared. However, my acne has not been severe for several years. One thing that really helped my acne was switching to an all-natural diet and eating lots of fruits and vegetables. My natural diet might have helped ease the transition into the natural skincare line, also, so it is tough to say. My reaction certainly wasn't bad enough to discourage further use!! |

I think diet is a huge thing. Over christmas it got really bad with all the crap I ate. Getting better the last week or so...but I've also been using a sample of skinceuticals daily moisturizer..it'll be interesting to see what happens when i go back to the decleor. |

The only thing that temporary worked for me was Cetaphil Cleanser, Differin Gel, and Tetracycline and Doxycycline. I'm trying an herbal supplement called AcnEase right now. Supposedly it has an 85% success rate. |

the doc gave me tetracycline in my teens and I never really noticed a change with it. Not interested in trying it b/c it lessens the effectiveness of birth control pills.
What is Doxycyline? Sounds like a type of penecillin or something!? Let me know how the AcnEase works for you! |

Doxycycline is a similar type of antibiotic as Tetracycline. I wouldn't recommend it if you saw no results with tetracycline. I saw less results with doxycycline. That is just what my local physician prescribed after I refused to go back to the dermatologist. The dermatologist simply wanted to keep me on the 500mg Tetracycline 3 times daily and Cetaphil and Differin and that just wasn't cutting it for me when he charged 75-125 dollars per trip. I'll let you know how this AcnEase works. Maybe we could both give it a try. It sounds very promising. I refuse to take Accutane by the way. |

I wouldn't take accutane either b/c of the lack of research on future childbirths. I generally don't like to take any meds..just what's absolutely necessary |

Actually, yes, I’ve been taking a Hair/Skin/Nails supplement containing Silica (aka “horsetail extract”) and MSM for the past three months. Though I originally started taking it because I heard Silica could boost growth of eyelashes (Silica is one of the ‘magic’ ingredients in Talika’s “Lipocils” product that you apply topically to your eyebrows or lashes), I’ve noticed that my skin is clearer and both my hair (including eyelashes!!) and fingernails are growing like there’s no tomorrow! As a rule, my skin isn’t too bad most of the time, but I have been known to get the random “Mt. Vesuvius” zit for no apparent reason every once in a while, however I haven’t had even a T-O-M pimple or breakout since October so I guess I’d have to conclude that it really does help. I bought my Hair/Skin/Nails supplement with MSM in the pharmacy-section of my local supermarket – it was like $10USD for 60 capsules – but I’m afraid I can’t recall the exact name of it...it was in a brown bottle with a purple cap and purple and orange label (which specifically says “Hair/Skin/Nails Formula”), if that helps. |

Best wishes lianne. I had terrible breakouts for a good 5 years, in part from hormones but also because I was slathering on waaay too much stuff on my face. Simplifying my routine and drinking lots of water and Chinese broths (nothing special, just the usual dinner soups) has cleared everything up. |

kei,
that's interesting. I'm really bad about drinking water, maybe I should try some broths.
I had horrible skin during high school..then it seemed to clear up quite a bit. My face isn't bad, there just always seems to be a couple on my face all the time. |

What type of Chinese broths because the medicine I ordered for acne contains the Chinese herbs Gardenia Fruit (Fructus Gardenia), Balsam Pear, Mustard Leaf, Herba Houttuyniae, Dandelion (Herba Taraxaie), Scierotium (Poriae Cocos). |

Carekate, if you don't mind me asking, exactly how many miligrams of Hair-Nails-Skin with MSM do you take a day. Wal-Greens has a Notral Hair-Nails-Skin with MSM supplement that are 250mg tablets. |

Will just plain MSM pills work? Or is it the Hair-Nails-Skin tablets I should be looking for? I talked to a pharmacist and she said the MSM they have is only proven for arthritis pain. Is this the same stuff? |

Oh, I'm terrible at drinking water too (it took 4 infections in 5 months and many lectures from the Dr) . I make myself carry a big Nalgene bottle everywhere so I can take a sip once in a while, otherwise I can go a whole day without ever having any (in pure form).
Hm... I've just always had different broths each night at dinner. Chinese soups are mostly about balancing the body, so it depends on whether the person tends to have a "cool" or "warm" body type. Some of what's usually (not all together) in our soups and what they do:
-lotus root (purifying);
-lotus seeds (nourishes kidneys);
-ginseng (mild stimulant for the heart, restorative and cleansing--winter only);
-red dates (for circulation, contains potassium, iron and calcium);
-figs&dates (moistens organs );
-Black silky chicken (restorative--usually when I'm ill);
-North+South almond seeds (moistens lungs, clears skin);
-brown rock candy (detoxifies);
-wolfberries (iron-loaded);
-Chinese yam (kidneys);
-lily buds (removes dead blood);
-dried shiitakes (boosts immune system);
-dried tangerine peel (harmonizes warming ingredients);
-ginger (warms body).
We only get the more "hardcore" herbs from the pharmacists if we fall ill. I stopped taking any of that stuff because it tastes sooo gross. Except "bitter tea", because for some reason it tastes very sweet to me, and keeps me "cool" in the summer. I have a cool-based body, but when my skin starts acting up my family always makes "cooling" tonics for me. The most popular "all-purpose" one is called Ching Bo Leung and it has: Job's Tear barley, lotus seeds, dried dragon eye, lily bulbs, foxnut, Soloman's Seal and Chinese dried yam. Some Chinese markets sell this prepackaged; it's supposed to detoxify the body, nourish the kidneys and lungs, and build up blood. We usually make it with trimmed pork loin, so you could try that. Another one is watercress soup, which is very cooling (supposedly not good for the elderly--not sure about that).
I guess "cooling" can in most cases be understood as "detoxifying". Unstandardized translations are so difficult. And this concludes today's lecture intro to Chinese broths. Ack, I hope all this made sense! |
