Okay, so I have a long history with acne. It is partly hormonal, and partly due to having extremely sensitive (yet resistant) skin. I do not have rosacea. The main problem is that it scars EXTREMELY easily.
For instance, if I wear makeup (doesn't matter if it's "hypoallergenic", tinted moisturizer, mineral makeup or what)-- it will leave tiny red pimples or red marks behind for months in the places I wore the most makeup, marks that are exactly like the ones left from normal acne break outs. I find this strange.
Also, absolutely nothing I put on my face makes any substantial difference. Not in texture or anything. It will sometimes break it out or leave ugly pink marks but that's it.
Basically the only thing that's safe to use on my face is water. (I know this because the ONLY part of my face that has always been unmarred is the area along the sides of my face, and above my lip-- since that's where I never put anything.)
But the problem is I need makeup to look presentable-- but makeup breaks me out. And my skin will not get better until it's left alone for months, I'd predict.
Not sure what I'm asking here, just wondering if any one else deals with something similar. |

Sounds hard to deal with.
Have you tried mineral makeup? Not one of the highstreet ones a pure one that is 'nasty' free (especially bismuth). Its' usually less irritating and with practice can offer good natural coverage. |

Doriane, have you tried Finacea or Skin Biology Copper Peptides? They are both believed to be good for sensitive skin and scars. |

I understand "semi" where yuo are coming from. I myself have never had acne, but for some reason when I get a bump, it leaves a small hole in my face....Like ice pick scarring.....My skin tone has been so bad that I tanned just to make it look better. The only thing I have found that has helped the tone of my skin is Karin Herzogs 2% Oxygen. I am currently using the KH Apricot and I seemingly like it better, as I feel it is helping more, on me.....But with that said, my skin is not super sensitive.....Maybe you could try their 1% oxygen, then move up(?) |

What is the colour of your skin, fair, ivory, etc? if very light, then retin A would help a bit, as it would prevent some of the acne and it would reduce the scarring. But start slow, at 0.01% every second day or so, and some people even need to wash it off after half an hour initially. If dark skin, don't do it, it might cause discoloration. |

I had also problem with ACNE and I was scarring after every pimple when I was 17. I have experiment with many ACNE products but couldn't find one that would solve my problem. The good news is that after a certain age, (24-25 for me) ACNE goes away without having to use any products. I would suggest you to visit a dermatologist. |

Margaritis, did you find a product that helped your scarring? If so, would you mind sharing? I honestly feel that KH Oxygen has helped mine a lot, but I wouldn't mind an added "push", so to speak. |

I forgot to also mention that if the scars are small (and look more like enlarged pores) then you can use a good primer (at the moment I am with Guerlain meteorites base) and a foundation on top and they get good camouflage. My acne does not seem to get worse with the primer, but I go easy on the foundation, only one pump.
Be diligent also about exfoliation with glycolic acid if you can stand it. 8-10% glycolic in a pH of 3.5 or less daily, or 2% salicylic acid, or a combination like lacsal |

Try mineral makeup, it's a little less occlusive. Also, are you remember to wash off your makeup every night? |

Mine does the same exact thing. I have been extremely careful over the years because I know that if I pick/pop them, they will scar and even with me leaving them alone, I will still get a small hole in my face. I don't understand why myself, as I have been getting the holes for over 15 yrs now. It kind of looks like small pores. I have found that the KH Oxygen has helped a ton. I am currently using Rosehip oil, as I was told it helps with scarring also. I also use Bio Oil, though it works for some people and not for others. KH Apricot is the main one I would suggest because I know the 2% oxygen has helped mine |

Thanks! I've actually posted on the kerin herzog thread as well. Im going to get the vit a apricot. When I was younger, my acne left red marks. Now they leave holes. dont understand why.
I've tried using tamanu oil for the scars but they dont seem to be helping much. Tamanu oil supposedly helps with scars too. I hope this product will work for me |

Hi, this is going to be gross, but I am sure that in most if not all cases the red pimple marks and the spike holes in your skins are actually marks of the demodex mite. You can google up information on it. And for home cures, if you are that way inclined, you could check out the earthclinic site. The info there is very useful and the remedies are effective. Too each her own, of course. Good luck! |

Hi,
I didn't have acne as a teenager, but I have started to get spots recently. I thought it started after I had laser hair removal but it might be hormonal too. I get them before a period.
I have been using arcs oil by going natural. It reduces the scarring and with olive/ Asian skin the spot marks are more visible and dark brown. The dark brown spot scars do not appear now and it seems to stop the spot from getting bigger.I really recommend it. My skin looks like it is spot free but in fact, I do still get spots but they heal and disappear almost over night. It is a very light oil that sinks into the skin.
Also sometimes I get holes because i have something like a blackhead. I mean there is something inside the hole that needs to be squeezed out.May be exfoliating will also help.

Whoa Pluto, I'm officially freaked out!!!
I know mites are a natural part of being a mammal... but wow. Time to put some tea tree oil in my cleanser. |

So sorry for abandoning this thread-- I was suddenly without internet access for a while. I'll address all the replies now:
Lucia: Yes, I've tried several different pure brands of mineral makeup (without bismuth and other irritants). Same problem. Granted, not as bad as drugstore foundation. Typically I use Illuminare, a liquid mineral foundation.
(And again, any makeup, wherever I put it, leaves tiny scar-like dots and also pink bumpy blotches. Went to dermatologist once, they said it was not rosacea. Only happens when I wear makeup. But lasts for a loooong time.)
Oasisjc: Yes, I always wash off my makeup. I use Pond's cold cream, as my skin is extremely dry and that's the only thing that doesn't dry it further/break me out/make it all flaky.
RussianSunshine: I haven't tried either. I've used Tazorac before (I think that's what it's called?) for a few months, but I was unable to continue it since it was too expensive. Made my skin texture better, but it was always too red and shiny.
I currently have level 6 green cream but am undecided on what regimen to use.. It makes my skin extremely flaky (the level 3 samples i used did, too)-- my skin is already flaky to begin with, so, this is hard to deal with. Makes makeup application impossible.
MentorAmy05: I remember reading about the Karin Herzog stuff on here a few years back. Will have to try samples if possible (I have almost no money, so I can't experiment too much right now.)
cashmerelover: I'm very pale. Roughly equivalent to MAC NC15, I think. As I mentioned above, I have Green cream which I'll try again soon.
And about primers, yes, I'd imagine they would help. Though I feel the silicones would probably irriate my skin.
faeriedust: Though you weren't addressing me, there's lots of oils and specific ingredients that help with scars supposedly-- kojic acid, comfrey, licorice extract etc. I've yet to try them but I know people have had luck with some scar lightening serums from Garden of Wisdom. (I'm mentioning it since it's a lot less expensive than some other similar products I've seen)
....
Regarding demodex mites-- Yep, I've read a lot about this on Earthclinic and various places. Supposedly they can only be killed by a few things, for instance Borax and sulfur. And neem oil maybe? (and Pond's I think has borax, but with the recent reformulation, that may not be the case anymore.)
....
I'm sorry this was so long. I can deal with the acne; it's all the discoloration and scars and weird mottled look of my face that I can't deal with. |

Doriane - please try applying Zinc Oxide to any irritated areas. I've had trouble with my skin lately and this has been a lifesaver for me. Just buy the Zinc Oxide that is sold for diaper rash.
In the morning you can apply it under your makeup (it will also act as a sunscreen). In the evening, apply a thicker glob on all blemishes.
Zinc Oxide is an anti-inflammatory so it's great for soothing redness too. |

Seriously! It is a gross thought; but even worse -- it's real. It's not a junkie's bugs-under-the-skin syndrome.
If your skin has no probs with them, you're simply normal.
If you are having issues, at least you have some resources to go to. Some simple things are effective. |

Doriane, this all sounds like something internal if you ask me - and something to consider is INFLAMMATION. Everything you are suffering from sounds like extreme inflammation. Trying to resolve inflammation is trial and error and can take a long time to get right - but just knowing it could be inflammatory is a good starting point at trying to cure all of your issues. |

Thanks for all the replies.
I will get zinc oxide when I can. I think the Olay moisturizers I like have it, but they may not have enough in it to make a difference- not sure.
As for inflammation, yes, maybe so. I wonder if eating mainly anti-inflammatory, low-glycemic food would help.
I do pay attention to my diet, drink tons of water, exercise and take the supplements I need and all that.
Cutting out sugar (and dairy) completely is one thing that makes my skin a bit smoother (less millia), I've noticed.
Anyone else have skin that seems to just not absorb anything? Regardless of how well-exfoliated? I've also noticed that my face doesn't sweat. Even when trying to steam it. My forehead does but not my face. Strange? |

Don't buy a cosmetic product - just buy plain Zinc Oxide that is sold for diaper rash. I'm finding it miraculous for all my skin problems. |
