Has anyone taken diatomaceous earth? It is the pure form of silica which is great for hair skin and nails. I took silica back in January to speed up hair growth and my hair grew an inch in 1 week which was super quick for me. In researching silica I found out about diamtomaceous earth and starting taking it about a month ago. My nails are growing fast and are super strong. My hair has grown. I haven't really seen much of a change in my skin, mind you it's only been a month. I know it's good for skin. Does anyone else have any experience with diatomaceous earth? |

I started taking silica from Quiddity nutrition just last month. Very chalky, powder form - not a great taste but we'll see what happens. |

Isn't there something about it not being good to take for prolonged periods of time. I must confess I read about it some time ago on another forum and was going to purchase some but then got directed to a site that said it shouldn't be taken for long periods as its very abrasive. |

What do they mean by 'abrasive'... |

From my understanding,DE is crushed shells.
I've never ingested DE. I sprinkle it on floors and furniture to kill any uninvited flea or insect. DE is supposed to dry them out, even their eggs. |

DM is in Philosphy's Microdelivery wash. It makes for a nice external scrub. |

I tried silica for a short while. It was REALLY constipating. And I DO drink enough water and eat fruits and veggies (almost exclusively).
On the other hand BIOTIN (5 mg) works nicely with no side effects. |

Biotin does work great but does cause acne in some people. |

The only thing I ever heard it was good for was fleas. |

I've heard that. My theory on this, though, is that the biotin is effecting a change in the hair shaft and the shaft, now thicker, perhaps, is effecting a change in the hair follicle where the acne-causing bacteria live. So their lives are being disrupted. So,think anyone getting acne from biotin only might look to a remedy for the follicular bacteria. |

DM is good as a killer for all kinds of crawly parasites. It's action is to cut them up -- it's like crawling through a desert of broken glass for those bastards. |

Yes, I have used it to get rid of slugs around my Hostas
I am currently researching the Silica for hair. When I was really good about taking MSM, my hair did grow pretty fast, my hairdresser even made a comment about how fast my highlights grew out. But I have read Silica makes the shaft larger too, so I wonder how much you need to affect that. I don't think I eat DE thought, since using it for slugs. |

I thought it was crushed coral. Yeah, its my favorite thing for pets when they get fleas because its non-toxic and like you said, it slices & dices the fleas to death. They have an exoskeleton so they get cut up and then can't retain water - they dry up.
You have to be careful rubbing it into your pet's fur though, since its not good for either you or your pet to breath in (& come into contact with delicate lung tissue), but it is good to ingest, i.e. when your pet licks their fur, since it gets rid of parasites. |

'Abrasive' is abrasive, not sure how you can misintrepret it. I think the worry is over what it can do to your insides. Think of it like sandpaper inside your intestines (sorry gross image but you get the point).

I've just gone back to the original forum where I saw it discussed and they mentioned "people were debating about the safety of this stuff, as it apparently contains high levels of aluminum..." |

Read your various supplement labels. I've noticed that silica is used in most as a binder or filler so you may be getting enough. |

Havent taken it, but use it in its topical form. Cannt speak in terms of results, which is the problem with using to many products but can say that from research that has been done is supposed to be very helpful. |

Just in case it needs to be mentioned. DE comes in 2 forms - pool grade and food grade.
Food grade will still kill slugs and fleas - but pool grade is poisonous. |

In Australia they sell this as 'Silica' in the capsule form and topic form (allot of different brands sell it as well) I use the topical form, however am not to sure after reading this threa. Australia is way behind with our products compared to America or England but have any of you tried this, or have any information? |

Aren't cucumbers a plentiful source of silica?
Also, I wonder how silica improves hair growth. I've heard that it does, but I wonder how it helps. |

If you are near an feed store, you may be able to find DE there. The issue with De is that its cheap but the shipping can be as much as the DE.
I have slacked off on using it. Many people swear by it. The Long Hair Care Forums has pages of posts about DE. |
