I was just wondering if it would be okay to use SB's Day Cover as a sunscreen? I am finding it really hard to find a good sunscreen. I live in Australia so need a really good one, but I hate the greasy feel, even though I have dry skin.

Would Day Cover provide enough protection? I am about to place an order with SB so any advice would be appreciated.

Or if not any good suggestions for a good sunscreen?

No, Day Cover is definitely not enough. If you do not plan to spend a lot of time in the sun, you can apply mineral foundation or a tinted moisturizer with SPF on top. I like Paula's CHoice Barely There Sheer Matte Tint SPF 20 or Nanci's Sheer Tint Mineral Makeup SPF 20.

But if plan to spend a lot of time in the sun, I would recommend Devita Sunblock SPF 30 or Clarins Ecran Multi-protection SPF 40. Both of them are physical sunscreens.

I'll use Day Cover on days I don't need a LOT of protection - like running in and out of buildings. But, for a full day in the sun, I use the Day Cover, plus an added sunscreen. The protection in Day cover is just not enough. Rate it about an 8-12 for protection.

It makes a great base underneath a stronger SS. With its anti-oxidants, it is attacking the damage that the strong sun can give the skin, but it does need help for really STRONG sun.

According to Dr. Pickart, the Day Cover contains 1% titanium dioxide.

Given such small amount of inorganic filter, I don't think it can provide enough UVA/B protection.

according to this formulation website

Quote:
Predicting how much UV filter to use to achieve a given SPF is extremely difficult, whether the filter is organic or inorganic. This is because the SPF of a sunscreen product depends a great deal on the formulation.

However, as a starting point, we can offer the following as guidelines:-

For titanium dioxide, 1% solids should give about 2-3 SPF units. Therefore 1% dispersion should give about 1-1.5 SPF units. So, for example, to achieve SPF 15 with only titanium dioxide would normally require between 10% and 15% dispersion, depending on exactly which dispersion is used (as indicated in the product lists, different dispersions have different solids contents).
For zinc oxide, 1% solids should give about 1 SPF unit. The zinc oxide dispersions contain 60% solids, so a concentration of 10% dispersion in the formulation should give an SPF of about 6.

I would like to know what everyone uses UNDER the Day Cover?

Do you use another CP product or something different?

We have to remember that with all the other anti-oxidants in the Day cover (CPs, and "high levels of the skin's natural sunblockers such as squalane and allantoin"). And CPs are anti-oxidants themselves so can correct 'sundamage'. All these ingredients help it in its quest as a protective sun product. Definitely not a 'sunscreen', but it does offer protection. That's why I'd rate it about an SPF 8.

I find it to be perfect for the winter here in the midwest and for running around as daily protection. It does need to be topped with something else for a full day in the sun or if you have sensitive skin.

I have used something under it in the past, but it doesn't really need anything. It has a smaller amt of CPs in it than the other products. I think SB rates the amt of CPs at a 2.5 out of 28 (with the SC2X being the 28 and CP serum being a 3). It really can work well on its own.

foxe, would you say that Day Cover has enough CPs to be a sole source of them? So that I do not need to use another CP product at night?

I use DC as my sunscreen on all but the most sunny days. I'm not a sun worshipper but love being out of doors.
Tonya Zavasta does not use sunscreen and discusses reasons why on her site. Very interesting. Has to do with diet as well as some other principles.

SB recently came out with a rating system on the amount of CPs in each product, and I did not know until recently if the Day Cover was strong enough on its own. But, it appears to be since it has almost as much CPs in it as the CP Serum. That's pretty strong - especially if you want to use the DC as a maintenance product. If you want to work on remodeling or scar treatment, then I would use a stronger CP as well.

*Keep in mind that the CP Serum is strong enough for remodeling on its own and is also a good CP to start off with since it's not that high on the scale of CP Strength.
