I am still new to posting here but I have been lurking and reading for months now.
I am trying to find more information about the silicon family as it relates to skin care. Every google I run has the same info and I am looking for more!
I think I heard something about dimethicone that either it was a cousin to a petrolium product or it was created from a non-renewable source. Aveda doesn't use it in their products but I can't remember the reason anymore!
I was working at an Aveda salon and spa but I changed jobs yesterday and am now using Dermalogica. Their stuff is so slippery and silky. It will take some getting used to.
I have a giant book to read but since Derm uses so much of the stuff, I want so independent info.
Thanks!! |

From what Paula Begoun says, she loves the use of silicones in skincare and haircare. It supposedly coats the skin and traps moisture underneath to help continuously hydrate the skin while also forming a barrier to protect the penetration of pollutants and dirt. I'm not sure how silicone doesn't clog the pores if it protects pollutants from entering... it would seem logical to assume it would block sebum from escaping from the other side though... But that's all I know about it - not sure if it's 100% accurate or not but I do know that some people can't tolerate silicones on their skin. Best to just try out some products yourself. |

I know with foundation primers, people constantly complain that they clog pores and cause breakouts. I thought it was some kind of silicone so I checked this out......
Smashbox primer ingredient list:
Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Trisiloxane, Silica, Dimethicone/ Vinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Extract, Propylene Glycol, Water (Aqua, Eau), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cola Acuminata Seed Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract. |

Like many curly girls I stopped using silicone-based conditioners and styling products at the same time as quitting sulphate shampoos. My skin and hair are much healthier for the change - I haven't had my hair cut in six months and my eczema is practically gone.
As I understand it the problem with silicones (-xane, -cone, -conol) is that many need stronger surfactants to remove them. AFAIK they are non-comedogenic providing they are thoroughly removed. Some are water based so won't be much use if you sweat or are out in bad weather, but presumably rinse away easily. I avoid silicones in skincare products because they are primarily there to give a silky feel and make a product feel more luxurious, they don't actually nourish skin. I prefer to protect my skin with plant oils or lanolin, something I don't mind my skin absorbing. |

Silicones are really an individual thing. I don't consider them good or bad. My skin hates dimethicone but does ok with some other silicones. |

Yep, I have them in my primer and was concerned about continuing, but found that if you don't have a problem with them, they're really not bad for skin. However, I apply the primer AFTER my serums & devita sunscreen (which I view as my moisturizer), so its not the first thing I put on bare skin.
And yes, if I didn't feel the need for primer to smooth my skin, I'd prefer something more nourishing. |
