I have recently been thinking about using copper peptides again. I did use them in the past but I have really just been using retin a for the past few years to treat active acne. Now my skin is clear and I'd like to boost scar healing and anti-aging in my skin care.

I have a bottle of supper cp serum I bought a couple of years ago and I am not sure if it has gone off. It has gone a kind of dark brownish colour when it used to be a dark greenish blue and it has tiny particles suspended in it but you can't see them when the serum is applied. It is also a very watery consistancy. The smell is quite strong sort of metalic and pungent. I have tried it on my hand and it hasn't cause any irritation.

I will buy some new serum in the new year but at the moment with christmas etc funds are a bit low. Do you think it would be ok to use the old cp serum or should I throw it away?

Get rid of it! Best case scenario the product is ineffective, worst case it is harbouring micro-organisms.

Don't worry about the color pandora. CPs are known to darken with age and they do not become ineffective (sorry Firefox, but you're wrong on all accounts).

Tests have been done on SB's products and they were still effective at the five year mark. They will keep better kept in the fridge and retain their color better there, so think about that in the future.

The particles are nothing to worry about. If still concerned, give Skin Biology a call.

I have gotten all this information from reading the SB forum, as these questions come up on there from time to time.

Minerals are inorganic so can't spoil. There might be other ingredients that could degrade. You could ask on the skinbiology forum.

Any pharmacist or lab tech will advise you to chuck something that has had a change of colour AND consistency AND possibly smell. Even if CPs endure that doesn't guarantee the formulation cannot spoil. We don't have a microbiology lab at our disposal so we have no way of knowing. That is not based on reading forums it is based on my employment and education history. It's the OPs call of course.

The copper in CPs have a smell normally anyway, so this is not an indication of the product going bad.

But, since her product has started to separate, she should contact SB to ask them about its stability.

The cps in the product should still be good, but the rest of the formula may need to be checked on.

Agree with foxe. Check Skin Bio - tell them the changes. I know when the products are fresh out of the box color is one way. Potency, efficacy and safety may not be affected with color - unlike Pharmaceuticals. Remember most products in skincare are dyed to LOOK pretty for use. Skin Biology does not do that. That is gross in itself. Dyes are used for marketing and they are done to maintain a look and to mask the undesirable.

What I have noticed is that each batch seems to be somewhat different. I use the CP quite sparingly and have never liked the smell. The first bottle I purchased was very thin in texture. The second is much thicker and the smell is not quite as strong as the first. Both are the Super Cp. I just checked my bottle to see the ingredients list to see which preservative they use and the bottle does not list the ingredients anywhere. I can only assume that if the CP lasts 5 years then they must use Paraben. Does anyone know?

I also have had that happen with the GHK serum. 1st bottle very thin, second bottle very thick. I know Dr. Pickart tinkers with the formula and I asked Nanci about this. He added something (I think a different preservative, but I honestly cannot remember what he told her, so this could be incorrect.) I also think he is adding the Celes ingredient to at least some of his products. No sure about the parabens, but someone was asking about the exfol cream on his forum and his reply was this "We do not use the regular detergents and quasi-detergents used in normal cosmetics. So our products are more unstable and more like foods."
