Hi everyone!
I have a problem when it comes to choosing the right color of foundation: the skin on my face is paler than my skin on the neck.
Should my foundation match my neck skin tone or face skin tone?
Any recommendations?

I am glad that you brought this up.
My neck is more pale, so I match the foundation shade to my neck so that I can cover any redness in my face. |

| Your foundation should match your neck skin tone, you don't want too much difference between your neck and face. You can also use a self tanner only on your face, because if the foundation is too dark compared to your skin tone, it might turn orange or if it rub off, it will be white on some places and tan everywhere else. |

| I just realized that my face is darker than my neck. I always thought my makeup was the wrong colour. I can't believe it took me this long to realize what was going on... d'uh. |

Yeah Im the same. My face is actually a little more olive/pink toned than my neck which is more yellow. I always find it hard with foundation because if I actually match it to my neck than it makes me look sallow and pale. But if I match to my face then it doesn't match my neck. So what do I do? I match to my neck and maybe a little darker closer to my face and blend the foundation into my neck. I'm usually in between shades so its easier to adjust my colour as Im always buying two colours in foundations. Otherwise if I find my foundation is a better match to my neck than I use bronzer to make me look better and not too pale. Either way it works for me. Sheer foundations or tinted moisturisers are great if you want something that will blend with face and neck and be more forgiving in terms of colour.
But I agree with the PPs its always safer to match to your neck, otherwise pick an in between shade, as I do, and blend well.

Well, of course if your neck is paler than your body, then you should match your face and your neck to your body skin tone or at least a shade not too far away from it. I hope it's not too confusing? lol |

When I matched my foundation to my neck I looked like a cadaver. I now follow the advice from the excellent book Makeup Wakeup and make my foundation one shade darker than normal. I went from L'Oreal True Match W2 to W3. I don't put foundation to the very edge of my face but rather concentrate it down the center of my face where it is reddish and feather and blend it outward from there so it doesn't look like a mask. Any brown spots I dot with the W2 (which works great as eye primer -- I hated to throw a nearly full bottle away) if I need to. I've gotten more compliments on how good my skin looks and that is the only change I've made.
