I'm getting very confused with all the posts on AHAs and BHAs. I am not sure which one to use. Someone here posted something about using a ph under 4, and that anything 4 and above is useless? Is that correct? But I don't see any products that are reasonably priced under a ph of 4. I looked at Skin Biology's acids and they are expensive if you plan on using them on your face AND body. I noticed that some here are using Walgreens AHA face cream with 8% AHA. Then I searched the internet and found Silkwrap Body Lotion by Alpha Hydrox. I am unable to post the link cause I'm a new member.

It's a large bottle of 12oz with 10% AHA, which is great, but it's a ph of 4. Does that mean it's ineffective? It seems like a far better deal than the Walgreens cream.

I need advice and help on how to get started here. Thanks!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, the lower the pH the more effective the acids are, but this isn't necessarily a good thing as only the most resilient skin can comfortable handle such harsh procedures. Ideally, you want to gently remove the dead skin cells without drying out or adversely affecting the skin. Many people report peeling, redness, etc, when they overuse AHA/BHA.

I just finished reading this http://allnaturalbeauty.us/ani52.htm It explains pH and AHA/BHA. I found this interesting.

Quote:
AHAs are water-soluble and BHAs are lipid-soluble (they also dissolve in alcohols). For this reason, BHAs are considered particularly suitable for acne and skin with clogged pores however they both work well in proper formulations.

I know that BHAs are considered gentler than AHAs, but wouldn't using BHAs in alcohol be more counter-productive? Especially for acne.

Also, what will you be using the acids for? Lines, acne?

I'm going to be buying Reviva Labs 5% Glycolic Acid Renaissance Cream. It's the cleanest formula I've found. I'm not sure what the pH is but it has 100 reviews giving it 5-stars.

Ingredients: Purified water, 5% glycolic acid polymer (extracts of sugar and rhubarb), extracts of pumpkin, peach, sage, comfrey, chamomile, witch hazel, vitamins A, D, E, safflower oil, sunflower oil.

The pH basically determines how acidic a compound is. The lower the pH, the more acidic. Basically, if you get a product with higher pH, it will still have its exfoliative properties, but it won't last very long as the skin begins to buffer itself, which essentially tries to raise the pH back to its normal levels. If you have a lower pH AHA/BHA product, then it will work longer since your skin will take longer to raise it back up. Anything between 3-4 would be effective yet still gentle for the skin. Any lower and you increase the risks of irritation, and any higher and you lose the effectiveness.

An excellent thread on pH

You can make your own AHA lotion easily and cheap

I have only skim read the article that Onmyboat linked to but I note some errors, you might be safer reading a more scientific source.

Wow, these are great articles! Thanks! So after reading these, it seems that the Walgreens and Alpha Hydrox daily lotions are pretty much useless with their ph of 4? I'd have to buy the more expensive Skin Biology AHAs/BHAs?

What are you all using? Which products are the best (other than the expensive Obagi line)? Someone told me about WizOzKansas and that they have lots of different peels. I'd also like to use daily AHA/BHA lotions, but not sure which ones to get?

I'd like to get a strong enough AHA/BHA to use as a daily body lotion, and I'd need a lot of it (not a tiny bottle). As far as the DIY lactic lotion, where do I find those ingredients (lactic acid, germaben?) Thanks!
