I have very dark lips I do not smoke, drink coffee, tea or alcohol.
About three years ago I had nice red lips pleasant colour and all people thought I was wearing lipstick but in actual fact I wasn't.
Now down the track my lips are very dark and has two spots/freckles on it. Darkest on my top lip. I know someone who has the same issue that is an outdoorsy person but I do not spend as much time in the sun as them. I also have very tan brown skin and tans don't go away for me. For the past 2-3 months I have been wearing SPF 20 lip balm.
I would like to know how to lighten them and try and get rid of those spots. Also the tan if possible.
Thanks |

Ironically, I admire dark lips so much that I have been known to use dark brown pencil to make mine even darker. Black people with dark lips just need a clear gloss and they look like they are wearing lipstick that never bleeds, fades, or transfers to anything the lips touch. Color me jealous.
I believe menthol in lip balm can make lips dark, so make sure yours does not have this. I was excited to learn this and got Carmex so I could finally have the dark lips I always admired. Unfortunately, instead of an even darkening, I got dark blotches punctuated by pink (raw looking) areas creating an ugly,sick-looking patchwork appearance. I was able to even them out and remove the dark marks by using Palmer's Cocoa Butter swivel stick as my lip balm and topping that with Blistex DCT lip balm which has sunscreen. I also don't think you should over exfoliate as I think it makes lips more susceptible to UV rays' and hyperpigmentation.
Also drink water as dehydration does cause dry lips which may crack, form scabs and just not help matters. |

Thank you Nonie aka AD for the information. Sad thing is the colour of my lips are two different colours which make it odd brown-red and black nearly. Well, some things I think make your lips darker is if you can tan well and don't burn up in the sun spend time outdoors. Funny thing is I rather stay indoors but I still am the same tan colour can't get rid of it all year round. The type of skin I have is able to tan easily and the tan doesn't go away. Also I have been mistaken for Aboriginal, Indian and someone from South East Asia.
So if you can't tan don't risk it and if you can good luck with it. |

tan155 my lips are two different tones too, top one being darker than bottom but I would not have it any other way.
If that isn't how your lips always were, try the Cocoa Butter and see. |
