Hi all, just wondering whether anyone finds much variance between diff. toners and variance between brands. I find it hard to notice much between the ones I've tried being: Clinique ( well apart from clinique as everyone knows what thats like ), Yonka lotion, Garnier and dermalogica. If you could give me some insight to what toners you like abnd why the are better than others it'd be much appreciated. |

I rarly use toners at all. If I use one it's after masks. The main reason I don't use toners is that almost all I've tried have dried my skin. Clinique was awful! Recently I tried Dr. Hauschka facial toner, but it dried my skin too. The only toner I use now is Phytomer's face dew. Lovely toner, doesn't dry my skin. |

I'm surprised you didn't notice a difference especially between clinique and yonka!
All I see in clinique is alcohol and witch hazel (alcohol bad! witch hazel is fine as an astringent), Yonka has plenty of plant/aromatherapy extracts in theirs which will have an effect on the skin - especially if used as a compress.
On the whole it's not something on a regular basis, perhaps I should |

I thought you only needed to use a toner if you had oily or combination skin? |

well- it depends what the company says some say they will aid removal of residue cleanser/make up etc, as a skin treatment before your moisturiser, skin stripper (clinique ) I'd read what it says on the bottle. |

Its all so random Some companies say you don't even need a toner (Philosophy) others say it is a crucial step in the routine. Why can't life me simpler |

I don't think it's necessary but some do help remove cleanser residue, normalise pH of skin, add some moisture, exfoliate etc
I can tell the difference between the quality of cleansers - particularly if you'd put Clinique in my "blind trial" basket. You might find that some are very similar though. I love Phytomer ones (face dew & the marine one) and also the Dr Hauschka one. Jurlique rosewater is really up there for me as well. I tend to use toners because I like them though - it's really mostly a personal preference. |

As with all brands there are a couple of Clinique products that I think deserve some merit. EVERY day I use Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion which is a toner with no alcohol, but has .05% BHA and soothing aloe. I've used it about 2 months now (based on recommendations from MUA reviews) and love it. I never seemed to like toners before this one. It's keeping my skin clear and I can use it along with my AHA serum without any problems. Most Clinique counters don't even keep it out in the showcases and will try their best to get you to buy one of the other toners. Best of all it's $10.50 for 6.7 fl oz. I do wish it was in a sprayer bottle though.
The other product I like is a shimmering sunscreen that I have been using under my eyes.

Well, according to one of our EDS moderators (I can’t find the exact thread to quote from or link to), toner is, in fact, a necessary part of the skin-care regimen because it helps restore the PH levels and/or the acid mantle?? (Pardon me if I’m misquoting you, CM!) Anyway, for years I’ve steered clear of toners/astringents because they seemed to strip my face. But after spending a couple months learning from the esteemed ladies on EDS, I know realize that there is actually a difference between a toner and an astrigent and even those with hyper-active oil glands in their faces (like me!) should steer clear of any toner/astringent that lists alcohol among the top-five ingredients because it’s going to be way too drying. Having said that, I’m still on the lookout for my holy-grail toner. I recently bought a bottle of Mario Badescu’s Cucumber Cleansing Lotion after having received a sample in my bag of freebies when I filled out their skincare survey, and I’m really liking it (no adverse effects at all and it’s been over a month). Imagine my shock and chagrin when I checked the label and found alcohol among the top ingredients. But, for whatever reason, it seems to work for me and I don’t feel overly dry after using it. But again, I’m still on the lookout for something better....
Just my 2¢!

Does using any cleanser change the PH level of the skin? Or is it just that some cleansers change it so you need to follow up with a toner to restore the PH level after using that particular cleanser? And what is it in cleansers that changes the level?
Sorry for so many questions |

To clarfy I meant the were much the same except for the Clinique and Garnier which were both too drying (sorry to cause confuson)
Cheri, Iv'e got that Clinique mild clarifying lotion too but i was scared off Clinique after reading the worst products thread on here I too found that one allright though. The regular was way too harsh dried my skin to no end. At the momment I'm loving my yonka lotion which is a loely spray which makes things easier, just wondering what else was out there though
Out of the brands that EDS carries I've found them to be similar eg: Dermalogica, Yonka.
Thanks for the tips all. |

mailnat, like everyone else my opinion of Clinique is low. It's the worst skin care line in the entire Lauder empire, except for that one fabulous toner! I did think of one other thing I don't like about it other than it not being in a sprayer bottle. It looks and feels like spit! Yep, it does. But it works so I can get around that.
As for other toners, everything I've tried felt soothing on my skin, but never did anything more than that so I stopped using them. When I add a step to my routine I have to see some visual improvement or I quickly delete it.

opps I have mislead the thread again I actually have a clinique clarifying moisture lotion which is the 2 step toner but with no alcohol and extra moisturising properties. not that that makes much diff tho as I've been won over by Yonka and tempted to try other (un-cosmetic counter-type) brands. |

I still say Clinique's City Block is good stuff. Non-chemical sun protection and recommended by Skinbio in the past.
The rest is horrid. |

I never used a toner before I started using the Janson-Beckett skincare line in July. Since I have added their Organic Toner after the Cleansing Milk. Because I am using a light cream like cleanser (Cleansing Milk) I really like using the Organic Toner. As said in other posts I feel like it removes any residue left on my skin and prepares it for my skincare routine. I have been very pleased with the results. I like the fact that my skin feels soft after using the toner and not tight. Although I never had very large pores, they seem smaller since I am using a toner. |
