Hello! I'm new here. I just started retin a .1 percent and have been using it a week. I have a horrible red spot on both sides of my chin. I have not applied the retin a to the pot in two days and it still is not going away. I've been applying antibiotic ointment to it. The retin a is starting to make other parts of my face red when applied but seems to go away after a while. I'm trying to decide weather I should stick with this or give it up? Anyone have the same thing happen who might have some advice or words of encouragement? Thanks! |

I would stop it completely until your skin is healed all the way. When you start again, you need to start with only 1-2 days a week and build up very slowly to nightly use, making sure you are only using a pea sized amount for your face, and wait 20-30 minutes after washing to apply it. You have the highest percent there is, so you may want to ask your derm for the lowest strength prescription and use that before the 0.1%. |

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same thing. It's really red and horrible looking now. She prescribed me minocycline to take also. Should I continue with that? |

Definitely listen to what Riley said...stop it all the way until you're completely healed. Have you ever had any experience with retin-a or a retinoid in the past? If not, I would question as to why your derm would put you on the highest strength right out of the gate. I was using Green Cream for about 9 months or so before I started on retin-a .05% and even then I still got major irritation around my mouth area with using retin-a few nights a week. I just cut back around my mouth until it settled down and started back up again....I repeated the process until my skin could tolerate it and worked my way up from there. |

Since that is an antibiotic, I would call your doc before you make any changes with that, Moser! |

has anyone used Retin A on the chest to get rid of brown spots?
I started about a month ago (alternating between .025 and .05) using it on chest, and hands. I also recently started on arms. Hands and arms no problems, and perhaps already seeing a bit of fading of spots.
On my chest it has gotten red and itchy though not too bad and I just hold off a day when that happens, but my concern is that there seem to be more brown spots than before. anyone had that problem? is this just damage coming to the surface that will slough off later or is this a sign it is not working and I should stop? |

What do you guys suggest I put on the red spots around my chin? I've gotta get this cleared up! It looks horrible! I hate going to work with this on my face! I've been putting a triple antibiotic ointment on it. I don't know if it's getting any better. |

Retin-A is powerful, and it works, but can cause problems even for normal skin. Red spots are not at all uncommon. Sometimes they are only a sensitivity reaction (inflammation) and can be managed by changing dose (either whole face or just the affected area). That can be accomplished by applying less (e.g. half as much; use water to dilute if needed to get coverage), using less often (e.g. every 2-3 days), or giving skin a break (go off until red spots resolve). You can also apply aloe vera gel to the red spots, which has a soothing effect, and while it may make the Retin-A less effective on that spot, that is part of the point (dosing). Most people find that they gradually build a tolerance to the side effects. It takes 7-12 weeks for the desired therapeutic effects. Now, some people will awaken a latent dermatitis of some sort (e.g. eczema)so if the spots persist you definitely want to see your physician. |

do you know of anyone using retin a to get rid of brown spots on chest and then finding that the RA causes more brown spots? is this temporary? or a sign to stop using it?
also it caused skin tags on my neck - which is a bit odd since I am not using it on my neck only on my chest. will the skin tags disappear? is there some way to get rid of them? is this a temporary or a sign to stop using RA? |

I've never heard of retin-a causing skin tags and don't think that would be where they are coming from. As far as the increase of brown spots on chest, do you live in a warm climate? ...and do you ever have your chest exposed to sun? One thing you must remember is use sunscreen religiously every day....even more so when using retin-a. |

its winter here. my chest never sees the sun.
its not exactly brown spots, its more like darker pigmentation. I did read somewhere that with RA it can get worse before it gets better re: the damage in the under layers is being exposed before they are sloughed off. its just kind of scary not knowing if that is the case and therefore the best route is to keep at it, or if it is just getting worse and won't get better. |

Moser, are the red spots raw? If so, get some diaper rash cream. That always helps the raw spots. |

I would find a new derm if they put you on .1 Retin A when you have never used it before. The bumps will go away. I use emu oil when my skin is overdone but you probably don't have any. I don't know why the same derm would give you antibiotics when it is caused by overuse of Retin A. My advice would be to find a new derm. |

I use 0.025 Renova and even that has given me some red patches - particularly when it gets near my mouth (definitely avoid doing that!). I had to work my way up very slowly even to this low percentage. I started with a retinol cream then to Renova every fourth night, third night etc.
Even now after 4 months I find I still can't use it every night on my cheeks without experiencing a mild burning for an hour or so. Bizarrely though my eye area can tolerate it every night.
Definitely just pare it right back and start again. Use some emu oil or basic moisturiser until it gets back to normal then start very very slowly. |

Retin A can be a real bugger!! I am using .05 Retin A, started with .025 which seemed to go ok, used that for about 3-4 months and then progressed to the .05, it was ok for a few weeks but then I started to get very dry, just in spots. I stopped completely for a few weeks until it had settled down. I am not back using every second night, I am mixing .025 & .05 together, seems to be ok so far. It definitely seems to make my skin alot more tempermental than usual!! |

I have been using Retin-A .025% for about a year. This past summer I started to use .05% and find that I peel even if I use it only once a week. My question is Can I CUT the strenght by mixing R-A with moister cream? BTW my skin hasn't improved. A couple of brown spots or minor imperfections are the same as they were before R-A.
Thanks for any suggestions anybody might have. |

Its been my understanding that its not necessary to move up in strength when it comes to retin-A, so my suggestion is to keep using whatever you have the least irritation with.
And if you refuse to use sunscreen with it, and are suffering more & more discolorations, I don't know what else we can do for you here. |

You must go slowly slowly when first starting out with Retin-a and it definitely sounds like the 0.1 strength decision by your derm was not a great idea.
Please tell me you're not using it every night - because that will just rip anyones face apart.
I'm using the 0.05 strength and even with that I mix it with some basic moisturiser to reduce the strength and then I only use it once every few nights. I use it like that for both my face and chest.
And sunscreen is a must! |

Thanks for all the replies! I have another question? I have taken in all the replies and i am now only using the retin a every other night. The spots on my chin are better. They are still red and peeling. I am thinking about only using the retin a for a couple of nights a week? Also, i have heard good things about the MURAD acne complex. I thought about using this. Can i still use retin a a few times a week with this? |

Stop using the Retin A until your face is healed. You are damaging your skin. It will not hurt your progress to stop for a week or more. |

Using 0.1 every other night is still far too much. Just stop Retin A altogether for now and use something very basic and moisturising for a couple of weeks.
Get yourself .025 Retin A or .025 Renova. Start off twice a week for a month, then every other night for a month or more etc. Just go very slow, and listen to your skin! If it starts burning too much or drying you out then pare it back again. Most people never increase the percentage to 0.1 even after a year or so of use let alone start with it every night.
Good luck, you'll be fine once you've worked out what your skin can tolerate. |

Yay!
When you next start, you can try a thin layer of moisturizer before the retin a. This will help buffer and cut the strength of the retin a. Good luck! |

Ok I promised when I restarted the RETIN A I would post a follow up to my problems. I let the burns completly heal and started fresh. I have been appling .1 retin a every other night, completely avoiding my chin area!! lol and it has been awesome! My skin is not so oily, not peeling anymore and looks great! No more breakouts! I am still taking the minocycline too. I really wanted to post this follow up so anyone who is starting retin a and having issues will keep with it! It is so worth it! I love it! |

That's great progress! I am using mine only twice a week and still having the peelies and breakouts! I use less than a pea size (Retin-a .05) and wait at least 2 hours after, even on top of a moisturizer, mixing it with a tad bit more. This is some crazy stuff and it is hard to stick it out, that's why I am on my 5th time thru the last 20 years! I am trying to make it this time! |
