Hi, Everyone, I have RA and recently, OA, too.
I take methotrexate for my RA. I see my rheumy this Friday. What are you doing for your arthritis? I'm not overweight and I exercise regularly. Although my OA is preventing me from walking very well. My condition is worsening. Sad

Hi Mars

Have you considered taking krill oil?

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2011/nov2011_Krill-Oil-Optimizes-Multimodal-Arthritis-Control_01.htm

According to this article HA and astaxanthin help also.

Thanks, ShastaGirl. I haven't tried krill oil, but I will. I do take HA and astaxanthin. I had an x-ray yesterday which showed erosion of cartilage in my hip. The doc said this is osteoarthritis. I'm going for an MRI next week to see if there's any rheumatoid in there, too.
Oh, I'm going to try magnets, too.
Thank you!

Oxidative stress contributes MAJORLY to the pain level of these diseases.

You need to lower that as much as possible.

Through diet and supplementation. (I have a fave, I sell it... I'm sounding like a broken record, 'cause I love it so much. But I'm pretty sure people don't believe me!) Do your research!

I read about oxidative stress, but I didn't understand it. Confused
I had an MRI last week on my right hip which revealed I have moderately advanced ostero. No RA there (thank goodness for that). My rheumy is sending me to an osteo hip and knee specialist.
I'm taking coconut oil now and taking a different supplement for bone/joint health, Cosomine ASU. Oh, I'm using magnets, too.

OP, I'm really sorry to hear this.

My mother has rheumatoid. She got it when she was in her thirties. She's now almost 70.

My mother has found vitamin D and fish oil to be really helpful. She also watches what she eats, consumes few processed foods, and walks during her lunch break (she still works full-time). She also sees a physical therapist.

Those things have been really helpful to her.

I'm glad your mother is able to manage her RA. Since my last post, I have found out my RA is in remission! However, because of my advanced OA in my right hip, I am going to have to have hip replacement surgery. I saw my MRI and there is NO cushioning there at all. It is bone on bone. My left hip is ok.

Mars,

Sorry to hear you are going through all this, both my dad in his 70's and a good friend at the same age had the hip replacements (dad was also bone on bone) both recovered amazingly fast and with little to no pain!

Wishing you all the best!

They seem to have it down to a science, very good results with them now, and my dad was almost 10 years ago!
Keep yourself from stressing as much as possible! You will do just fine! Smile

Hi, My RA is active again after several months in remission. Has anyone heard of or tried Sativex?

Mars so sorry to hear of your pain. I dont have any advices for RA but I did have OA for a number of years. For me, it wasnt what I *took* as much as what I *eliminated* that totally got rid of the pain/stiffness.

I eliminated gluten, sugar/sugar substitutes, egg, peanuts, soy and corn from my diet. These are known pro-inflammatories and are pro-allergens for some people. Its def worth a try to see if they might be factors in your inflammation/pain problems.

Its not that hard to eat this way either. There are tons of books out now and the JJ Virgin Diet shake is an easy breakfast for me, mixed with a Greens Powder. The results are dramatic! I used to live on diclofenac and now I dont even need Tylenol! Nothing! No pain at all. No neck stiffness or hand stiffness ever.

Good luck.

Hi Mars! Hope youre having a good day!

Some books that were helpful to me in combating inflammation that I want to share with you:

The Healthy Gluten-Free Life by T Credicott (some good recipes that I use a lot and really are tasty for everyone).

What You Must Know About Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & More (Choosing the Nutrients That Are Right For You) Pamela Wartian Smith MD MPh
(Dr Smith is a world expert in anti-ageing medicine and her interest stems from her own health collapse and subsequent recovery).

Im not a doctor but I have found that the key to health is nutrition. Nothing we put on our skin is as important as what we feed our bodies << Truth.

A great cookbook is Gwyneth Paltrow's It's All Good. She indicates which recipes are vegan or gluten free or protein packed or are for the elimination diet. I am gluten free right now and have made about a dozen of her recipes and they are all delicious and easy to make. You might have to make the the occasional trip to a health food store for something like xanthan gum (used in gluten free baking) but many items can be substituted. She is a health conscious good cook who loves food. Her kids are allergic to gluten, I think. Moses loves to cook and even has a recipe in the book that he made up! I bought my copy on amazon.com for less than full price.

I have systemic lupus with Sjögren's syndrome, my Ana test was really high my rheumy put me on plaquenil at first it didn't help so she wanted to put me on prednisone and some other medication. I refused and started 100% raw food I felt really good but didn't keep up with it so my pain came back. After lot of research I found the gerson therapy so I followed it with all the juices soups supplements and enemas required. The lupus pain got better but I had healing crisis. They do mention that and I had 3around the times they mentioned 2 weeks, 5 weeks and 3 months.

I'm supposed to do it for 18 to 24 months but i did it for 6 months then my mother in law came to spend few months with us I have to cook for her so it's been hard keeping up with it. I do feel much better than before, I'm a year n Half away from getting my black belt in MMA. I'm getting ready to post a video of me breaking boards and bricks Razz

U don't have to go that extreme but give up gluten dairy soy sugar. In the gerson therapy u can have sugar thru fruits, honey, maple or even raw organic unfiltered sugar. Sugar is not what causes inflammation but the kind of sugar.

Also buy everything organic.

This makes me wonder if cane sugar is okay. Most white sugar is GMO beet sugar (unless it specifically says "cane") and it wouldn't surprise me if that is causing all the health problems. Buy a box of each and smell them. The GMO beet sugar has an odd smell, at least to me.

Gwyneth Paltrow's cookbook, It's All Good, has lots of great recipes without those allergenic foods. Some substitute goat or sheep dairy for cow. She uses brown rice syrup, honey and maple syrup instead of sugar. Some soy recipes, but it must be organic soy and tofu. Again, since most soy products are GMO it wouldn't surprise me if that is why people are allergic.

I heard that gluten allergy could be tied to some forms of hybrid wheat so eating "ancient" wheat can help.

I'd like to see people experiment and see if they ate all those supposed bad foods in organic form, if their symptoms would go away. Or perhaps don't eat them for 90 days and gradually add the organic versions in one at a time for a month, for example, so see if there was any reaction.

Hi, Everyone, I saw my rheumy yesterday. He prescribed a short term use of Medrol Dose Pack. (steroid). He said if that didn't calm down the flare up, then it most likely means my RA is progressing.
I have almost eliminated dairy and sugar from my diet, peanut/peanut butter, too. I don't think it's making any difference. There are other foods like tomatoes I have eliminated.
Have any of you taken prednisone or another steroid short term (one week)?
Thank you, all for your suggestions and comments.

Have you tried UC II Undenatured Type II Collagen? It's has to be undenatured Type II. There are alot of collagen supplements but they are denatured and those molecules are changed with heat. Undenatured is not changed by heat is is absorbed in the intestines. It's over the counter at supplement stores. There are several double blind studies using this supplement. It takes about six to eight weeks to start making a difference.

There is also an OTC supplement called Flex-a-mine with Boswellia Serrata extract in a form called Aflapin. There are double blind studies using Aflapin as well. I take both of these for my arthritis in my hands. It doesn't get rid of it completely but it helps a great deal.

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I have taken collagen supplements in the past, but they were the wrong kind. I will check into that as well as Aflapin.

How are you doing on the steroids?

FOrgot to mention the Deadly Nightshades connection to arthritis. Tx for talking about it. One of the Arthritis Diet books did mention that elimination deadly nightshades helps with reducing inflammation. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant.
