Is pimples from Vitamin C serums normal?
I tried a sample of Cellex-C back in December and got zits...then tried a sample from Skinceuticals recently and got zits...
I remember seeing a thread before about it...I wonder if it's temporary and will go away or if it's just not right for me. |

Hi Lianne
When you say 'zits', do you mean pimples or just little bumps on the skin surface.
My first bottle of Vit C was Cellex C ADVANCED serum. If I am not wrong, the concentration is 17.5%. It was too strong for me. Tiny reddish bumps appeared where the smile lines were. I switched to Cellex C Vit C for sensitive skin (only 7.5% strength) and it was OK. By the time I got through this bottle, I was ready for Skinceuticals C10. Now, I am using Skinceuticals C20. I must say I love how Vit C has made my skin much brighter and clearer.
It may be that your skin is a tad sensitive to the Vit C. Since you have already bought the Vit C, I suggest you either try to apply alternate days first, OR dilute your Vit C with your B5 gel before application.
Hope this helps

yes, it's actually puss filled pimples. It's just a sample that I have of the Serum 10.
Diluting it in my moisturizer is a good idea. I really like the idea of the vit C, and am a bit disappointed with the zits...I'll try for a bit longer and see what happens though. |

Hi Lianne,
I have my best friend hooked on the vit c and she swears it breaks her out. I dont' have the same problem but use Retin A which helps to keep acne clear. She is trying the retin A with the vit c and so far so good she hasn't been breaking out.

Hi Lianne!
I have been using the SkinCeuticals C (15%+AHA (15%) and have been getting white-capped pimples. I have always had breakouts but not like this. Usually my pimples takes days to become ripe. For some reason, I put on the serum in the morning and by the time I get home at night there is a full grown pimple. It is like the serum is helping with the getting the infection to the surface of my skin faster. I have been using Retinol on my skin at night now which may help with the pimples. |

m...retin a is similar to the skinceuticals retinol right? I've used a sample of that recently as well..maybe the zits are from that.
I'm just going to use the C and see what happens in the next few weeks. Then I'll have a better idea I guess. |

Hi Lianne,
Retin A is available only by prescription. It is prescribed for acne but most of us use it for its anti aging benefits.

You could always just go see your family doctor and have him write the prescription. I have tons of the stuff and only pay 3.00 for it with my health plan. I would gladly send you some but I am using the 0.1 which may be too strong to start with. Most people start at 0.25 or 0.50.

I think the whiteheads are being caused by your retinol. Retinoids cause "purging". This means by using retinols, your pores are shrinking and pushing the sebum to the surface. This is good to get the gunk out of your skin - and should only be a phase. When this happens to me, I try to stick with the product a while longer unless it's absolutely irritating. |

sheri, $3? wow. I should find out if my plan covers it. I get prescription help from the gov't too but I doubt they pay for 'cosmetic' stuff...cheaper than buying the retinol stuff |

I pay a flat rate for all my prescriptions with my health plan from work. I am not sure they would consider it a cosmetic treatment since it is an acne treatment. It would be work looking into as it stronger and really does keep zits at bay.

I'll definitely look into it. My drug plan is a cheap one. It's required by the college so it's only $80 per semester (drug and presc)...they didn't even pay my flouride at the dentist!! |

Prescription strength tretinoin is a drug, and is available in a variety of strengths, percentages, and is only available with a doctor's prescription. Again, it is a DRUG! Over-the-counter retinol products have a lot lower percentages of this vitamin-A derivative. |
