On the advice of my aesthetician, I began using tretoin a little over a month ago to treat my "adult acne." I am tolerating the dryness but I still seem to be breaking out almost as much as before! The medication helps the breakouts clear up faster and I think it is improving the scarring I have from old breakouts - but shouldn't the purge phase be over by now? I did some research and I found that one of the "inactive" ingredients is dimethicone. In my experience, dimethicone makes me break out like crazy. Could there be a connection? |

I think the actual name of the ingredient is "Cyclomethicone {and} Dimethicone Copolyol" and it is suppose to impart a 'smooth, silky, non-greasy' feel.
At least that is the ingredient in my Retin A Micro and it does have that feeling to it.
Perhaps just wait a little longer and see how things go. Purging is to be expected at the beginning of tretinoin use. |

I have been on retin A .05 for about 5-6 weeks now, and I believe my skin is still purging. Do you use every night? I try for 6 days a week. My DR told me to use it everyday-when I mentioned possibly skipping a day here & there to avoid the negative reactions of peeling, redness, he insisted everyday. The purging phase is a good thing though I say keep at it |

It can take a full 3 months for your skin to fully adjust and stop purging. Are you using tretinoin cream? generic? |

I am using the generic tretoin. I started out every other day and just moved up to 2 days on, one off. Ridiculously dry, but no redness or irritation from increasing the frequency. |
