This question is for anyone who lives/been to Austin and San Antonio.

I'm going to Texas with my boyfriend in April. I am so excited, I can NOT wait!!!!

Where is great shopping in these two cities? Things that are a MUST see? Places to eat?

I'm looking for vintage and trendy clothing, shoes, jewelry. Looking for boutiques and outlet malls

I live in Austin (NW) but do got to SA a lot. Being 6th generation Texan, barbeque is in my blood, but Tex Mex with a great Margarita comes a close second!
Austin has a lot of funky boutiques around Guadalupe, 6th and Lamar, North up at the Arboretum area. Good shopping out at the Domain for a little upscale browsing with excellant resturaunts and nightlife with the young professional crowd. My son and his wife are there weekly! She's a district manager for Charmin Charlies so they travel around to the area stores a bit.
It depends on what you like to eat but the Barton Springs/Zilker area has some great places. One of our faves is Chuy's on Barton Springs. Can't go wrong for great margs and Tex Mex! Let me know where you are staying and are looking to eat and I can narrow it down. If you google the best places to eat in Austin, the list is pretty much true I have found. West 6th has some great nightlife (for all ages) and live music is always a plenty! We were at Little Woodrows last Sat. night on W. 6th with young and old, dogs welcome and so many beers to choose from!
In SA, the Riverwalk is a must and we stay there a lot. Love La Mansion and Hyatt across from the Alamo (got to say my homage to my 3 fallen ancestors). I have always thrown a penny for luck in the famous fountain that runs from across the street in front of the Alamo, thru the Riverwalk Hotel and down to the river. A family tradition that even my kiddos do and it works like a charm! Great drinks and nightlife up and down the riverwalk and we always eat at Landry's Seafood. We drive every Christmas to see the lights, eat at Landry's and make a New Year wish!
We also love the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa, great golf and the fab Wildflower Spa that is ever so peaceful and luxurious. Westin La Cantera has great golf and a great shopping complex next to it. The beds are Heavenly!
In between Austin and SA is San Marcos. A great little college down where my son went to Texas State that is very pretty. A river for tubing runs thru it (very cold) and it has a Texas Sized Outlet mall on I-H 35 heading out to SA. Can't miss it! Nice Gucci outlet store there that always has a gem or two. Also some cute little boutiques around the square with a few bars for nightlife if you don't mind the college crowds.
Between SM and SA is Gruene, which is also on the River. The Grist Mill is a great place to eat overlooking the River in the setting of the old Grist Mill. Great little shops for antiquing around the block there. Also a stop for the motorcycle weekend riders! Gruene Hall has great live music with our Texas favorites and a celebrity or two is usually spotted making a surprise appearance.
So no matter where you go in between those areas, you should have plenty to do and the wildflowers are blooming!
We look forward to having you visit us in Texas, ya'll!

Hi there,

I'm making a business trip to Austin in May, planning to visit the downtown area, do you have specific restaurant and music club recommendations?

Will be in San Antonio too, with colleagues - so might have to do what they want, lol.

I forget the name of my hotel in Austin - it begins with a "C" - I have to look it up.

Thanks! BFG

The downtown area has a lot of nightlife, clubs and restaurants. Especially the Zilker Barton springs area which is also so pretty! Rainey street is a great new area that a lot of our friends go to (and kids) but I haven't been there yet.
I would say it depends on what you like to eat such as steaks, seafood, Tex-Mex etc. and the type of music you like. There are so many good places to eat that also have live music venues. Shady Grove on Barton Springs Road is one of them, especially if you like Texas artists.
I am so excited we are having all of you visitors to Texas and at a great time of year!
