Hello all!
I think I've hit a wall with my current skin care routine. I'm 36 and within the last 6 months I've developed some cystic ache on my chin, dry patches on my cheeks and a few fine lines and wrinkles. What skin care products do you recommend (cleanser, toner, etc.) and why?
Thanks so much!!! I meet with clients for my job and it's embarrassing being in my mid-thirties with zits! |

Paula's Choice makes several gentle and non-drying products for acneic skin. In addition, Paula's Choice also has a very comprehensive line of exfoliants that could help you with your problem skin. Most of her products contain antioxidants that are good for aging skin.
If you are a woman of color, check out Susan's Taylor's Rx for Brown skin line of products. From what I hear, they're very gentle yet effective.
Finally, take a look at Eminence's Blueberry Soy cleanser. It has salicylic acid plus botanical extractss and anti-aging ingredients (like alpha lipoic acid and coenzyme q10). |

The Oil Cleansing Method is a good choice. It doesn't strip oil from your face, and it helps extract sebum. Some people do purge, but if you're already breaking out, that may not be a concern. You can start out with whatever you have lying around the house, olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc, and see how your face reacts. You can also mix in a little polysorbate 80 which helps remove it easier. Just remember to remove all the oil. |

I agree although my personal preference is using no additions except for Castor Oil and for acne a bit of Tea Tree Oil.
There is a great thread here on the forum.

I agree with onmyboat. OCM is gentle, and I also prefer the emulsified form. Emulsified with Poly80 makes it infinitely easier to literally rinse off the oils.

Looks like the Egyptians might have been ahead of even Stephanie
"As well, Hieroglyphics on the walls of Egyptian temples depict the blending of oils and describe hundreds of oil recipes. Within these writings tell of scented barks, resins of spices, and aromatic vinegars, wines and beers that were used in rituals, temples, for embalming and medicine."

Hi there,
I do agree that the OCM is fantastic if you want a very gentle cleansing routine. Great for makeup removal too.
Unfortunately for me it didn't get rid of my congested skin issues. I'm also in my 30s and have combo congested( blackheads etc) skin. I have a good diet and I exercise & drink lotsa water. Didn't help really with the congestion issue. So now I'm using a clarisonic brush and started using a priori gentle cleanser ( with AHA) and its been helping a lot. My skin needs a good cleanse everyday, a good peel once a month. For me this has been the key to my issues. I don't tone. Just apply an antioxidant serum with SS in the morning and VIt c with retin a at night. I only moisturizer when I feel my skin needs it. I try to keep it simple.
Not sure if it helps but every skin is different |

Changing your pillowcase at least once a week might help. |

Really? I find the opposite for me. My skin is also kind of combo (forehead a lot less oily than it used to be). I just did OCM again yesterday (I've kind of abandoned it because it's so time-consuming) and there's a huge difference. I've had bits of sebum coming out, then I steamed my face and extracted blackheads from my nose, forehead and some plugs from the sides. I've been using a fairly inoffensive cleanser with a 5.5 pH and even that left my face a little tight. But after OCM my face is glowing and smooth. I used 100% grapeseed oil.
I don't know if there's anything that can "cure" blackheads, but OCM will at least attract the oil in the pore as it accumulates so they're constantly being cleared out. |
