Hi There Everyone,
I'm a complete newbie poster to this forum but have been reading for a while now.
I've been experimenting (unsuccessfully!) with different kinds of moisture for facial skin and am currently using pure avocado oil. To be honest it makes my skin look older - not quite what I expected.
My main problem is the very dry, flaky, sore, cracked skin on my nostrils which never goes away no matter what I try. It's quite soul destroying year after year trying to resolve it but usually just making it worse. :0(
Anybody had a similar experience at all? I would sooo love to hear from you. :0)

Have you tried cortisone cream for a few days? This works for me. I wouldn't use it all the time but just as needed. If that doesn't help I would definitely see a derm.

I agree, also if Avocado oil is not working for you, are you applying to a damp face, or using any type of humectant under it?

Smile Hi GirlieGirl,
Thanks for the reply.
I've tried everything tbh, including cortisone cream. Some things appear to work for a day or two then back to square one. It's especially bad if I drink any alcohol whatsoever - even one glass of wine will cause much soreness in the days following. Ohh how I miss my glass of wine on a Friday evening! Sad

Have you been checked for eczema? Alcohol is a common trigger.

I would see a derm then. No use in trying to guess what you have and using treatments that may make it worse.

Hi DarkMoon,

I'm pretty new to the using oils to moisturise. So not sure what humectant to use with the avocado oil to improve it's effectiveness or even how to use it with the oil. I've been put on anti-biotics for months and other chemical treatments to try and clear it up and I don't want to do that to my body anymore, so now on the natural path to skin health if I can find a way to do it. Have also tried coconut oil but this gave me icky boils on my face lol - not a good look! Very Happy

My doctor kinda stabbed in the dark and guessed at Rosacea and treated me for that but I don't have typical symptoms. Only the alcohol trigger is relevant to Rosacea. I guess they don't like referring you to specialists in the UK as it costs money they don't like to spend.

The simplest way and recommended by those who sell oils/blends is to apply any oil to damp skin.
It can be a lot of trial and error to find exactly which oil suits your skin. Boils are not a good look! Laughing
If you apply oil just after washing your face do it while it is still damp, you can also use a spray bottle to dampen, distilled water is best for that. Very Happy

I hear that a lot, it is also a trigger for eczema.....just do a quick google search for eczema triggers.

Thank you DarkMoon,
I've battled with this solo for so long it's such a nice thing to get some knowledgeable input and ideas from someone else! Smile
I'll try the misting before I oil to see if that helps. When I think about it - it does seem as if the sebaceous glands on my nose just packed up and left the building - they just don't seem to produce any oil to nourish the skin. Am awaiting the arrival of some jojoba oil and macadamia nut oil too - am in full fighting mode and these are my new weapons! lol Bad Grin

I have had that for years and the doctor told me that it is bc the skin is so much thinner there and I have rosacea.
My med spa recommended gentle cleansers, which I do and a Clarisonic, which I have. Neither helped much.
I use vaseline, occasionally Obaji Active (which has cortisone) but niether has been a good fix, just a temp band aid.
What i have found recently that I am loving is the NeoStrata Problem Dry Skin Cream. It is making it more normal and less flaky.

"This rich cream is formulated with 20% Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) to smooth and moisturize severely dry, rough and thickened skin such as knees, elbows and heels. Significant improvement has been demonstrated in heavily calloused skin in as little as 3 weeks of once daily use. The highly emollient beeswax and skin conditioning oils help to instantly reduce skin roughness on contact. This new, fragrance-free formulation contains Pro-Vitamin E and Maltobionic Acid and also helps reduce scaling and flaking associated with hyperkeratosis. Created by dermatologists. Fragrance-free. Formulated with 20% Hydroxy Acid blend, Maltobionic Acid, and Pro-Vitamin E."

Hope that helps!

This may be an odd suggestion but maybe pop in and see a CTM practitioner. Sometimes taking a completely different approach on things we've battled with for a long time just does the trick.

I mention it because I'd given up on solving the mystery of a flakey patch on my finger, and was in to see a ctm doctor for something else. He asked about it, I shrugged, he gave me a smelly ointment as I left and like MAGIC, it was gone the next day!

The alcohol trigger could also indicate atopic eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis, because alcohol is pro-inflammatory and temporarily suppresses the immune system. Rosacea nor either form of dermatitis are curable unfortunately. Hydrocortisone cream is the only corticosteroid available to purchase and it is very weak, but there are many stronger ones on prescription. Please don't add in new exfoliants if there is any chance you have a form of dermatitis.

You really don't need to see a dermatologist these are easy conditions to diagnose and treat, you simply need to see a better GP. You have the right to ask for a different doctor within the same practice or to switch practices entirely. Another port of call is a good pharmacist. BTW the NHS is the largest employer in Europe with a budget to match, you should be referred to the hospital if you had a case that does not respond to standard treatment in the community. Maybe five years ago I was told on a course that US citizens spend ~22% and we spend ~12% of our gross income on healthcare. I don't think too many Brits are willing and able to up their taxes by 10%! Sad

If you have the time to run a search I have posted loads of times on anti-inflammatory, low glycaemic index diets for dermatitis and other dermatological complaints. Also on why oils that are rich in oleic acid (like avocado) may actually increase irritation and abnormal keratinisation. It is likely to be more effective to use butters or waxes that supply the specific lipids found in the skin barrier. If you want more targeted advice please expand upon 'trying everything' and 'other chemical treatments'. Have you removed all sulphate surfactants and other known irritants from your skincare, haircare and make up routines?

HTH. Smile

It could be allergy related. Does your nose run when you drink? If so you may pat it more with tissues. You may want to try fabric hankies instead of Kleenex and see if that helps.

I like aquaphor cream when my nose is dry. Happens for me in allergy season.

I almost forgot allergies have a season, they are year round down here!

Seriously I agree, and if it is eczema even dust is a possible trigger.
