Paula's Choice exfoliants have gotten a lot praise on several forums. She makes several types of exfoliants, and you can get the samples.
You can try using that along with a cream for skin discoloration. Makari and Meladerm are two bleaching creams that I know of, but there are literally tons of them. (look for such ingredients as licorice, arbutin, mulberry, bearberry, uva ursi, kojic acid, and azaleic acid)
The exfoliant will help the product penetrate better and help remove the top layer of dull skin.
I hope this was helpful. Please let us know how it goes. |

Welcome! Is your melasma dermal or epidermal? Eipdermal responds well to topicals, dermal is very difficult unfortunately.
Lactic acid is a nice introduction to Alpha Hydroxy Acids, it is the most gentle, hydrates whilst it exfoliates and has a mild effect on pigmentation with regular use. Just purchase 88% lactic acid and dilute right down with water - maybe to 22% once a week to begin with. You do not need to neutralise LA providing you start low and build up slowly, it has large molecules which cannot penetrate very deep. Once you feel confident you can move onto a deeper peel such as an 8% TCA. Sorry to disagree with Veronica but many of the Paula's Choice products are not well thought of because they are full of rubbish and actives not at proven concentrations.
I am a great believer that every active should perform more than one function, work hard for you. Some of the actives which have the most scientific evidence backing them for hyperpigmentation and general skin health (antioxidant, anti-ageing) are ascorbic acid/ magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (both forms of vitamin C) whereas N-acetylglucosamine and niacinamide (a B vitamin). Vit C works well alongside vitamin E, NAG and niacinamide work synergistically with kinetin. You can make your own serums containing these actives, kits and links to published research here

Or purchase ready made with no cheap fillers: I am using the MyFawnie KinNiaNag at present and it is the silkiest texture and super gentle. Numerous reports of great results for this formula over on the Skincaretalk forums

Apply a good zinc oxide sunscreen daily all year round, re-applying each time you are exposed to the sun (UV rays can penetrate glass and cloud; bounce off concrete, sand, snow). Lastly be sure to eat an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant rich diet to get the best from your new skincare routine.

This from pregnancy? If it is, it usually resolves itself but it can take a long time. Paula's choice does make a couple of lightening products. You might want to check them out if you haven't already tried hydroquinone. |

It seems as if Paula's Choice exfoliants work for some and not for others. At the end of the day, everyone is different. I've yet to use them myself, but I plan to try them as soon as I can.
She has a line of AHA and BHA exfoliants at different concentrations. Here's a few forum posts regarding her exfoliants:

You can also try doing a Google discussion search to find out what people are saying on other forums about them. Usually, if someone dislikes her products, they'll recommend something else. Here's the link:

In addition, she sells samples and has a money-back guarantee.
Finally, FireFox, what rubbish ingredients did you see in her products, and which actives did you find at unproven concentrations? |
