Hello all! For roughly the last year, I have been getting small, colorless bumps on the chin. They are not very noticeable from far away but I can See and feel them. I am assuming these are clogged pores, but I am not sure. I also get an occasional acne there too. I have tried Glycolic and salicylic acid, scrubs, and various masks and acne treatments. Does anyone else have any experience with these? If so, how did you gt rid of/ treat these? Any help is appreciated! Thanks! |

My chin area responded surprisingly well to light lactic acid peels (~22% - ~44%). What is doesn't like is overly aggressive cleansing and/ or exfoliation. If you can be more specific about what you have tried, how frequently and what you are using at present we can trouble shoot. |

Thanks for the suggestion. I have used lactic acid before, but never solo or in that high of a percentage. I use a lot of products, which may very well be one of my problems.
Day:
I use a Mario Badescu cleaner, a DIY niacinamide serum, and a very basic face lotion followed by makeup
Night: wash with lathering face wash (philosophy's purity most of the time) followed by Mario Badescu cleanser, DIY c serum, and face lotion after 30 minutes.
Occasionally, I will use do a aha or bha peel. I use a clarisonic maybe 3 times a week. I also like facial scuba, for some reason I think I can scrub them off I guess.
Have you had something similar to this? |

I have that problem as well. What I find works is doing Oil Cleansing for a few minutes, then steaming my face then extracting the plugs. |

I get/ used to get a lot of clogs in my chin and nose, I can extract the nose but the chin won't without causing tissue damage. You cannot scrub away anything more than the superficial part of a black/ whitehead, and it does sound like you might be using too many exfoliating/ irritant products. Is your Badescu product enzyme-based and your vitamin C is the acid form? If you remove too much oil or too much of the skin's protective stratus corneum your body may respond by over-producing sebum or keratinocytes (skin cells) to protect itself from water loss and chemical ingress, which can actually worsen clogging!
Maybe just use a super gentle lotion or oil cleanser with your Clarisonic extra gentle head, no pressure? Then a weekly AHA/ BHA peel of your choice letting your skin heal and irritation subside in between. In between avoid any alkaline products or harsh sulphate surfactant which dry out and damage the skin barrier. Really you should not need to double cleanse at night, and not cleanse with more than water in the morning. Definitely don't exfoliate daily.
Lastly consider your diet and lifestyle, because these impact on the specific composition of your sebum and how your skin exfoliates naturally both of which contribute to comedone formation. Skin that is chronically dehydrated does not exfoliate naturally properly and clogs appear far more visible because the skin 'shrinks' away from the edge of the pore. |

Thanks for all the suggestions! I use the mario badescu cream soap by the way, I should have specified because there are quite a few and the enzyme is the most popular. I do use l absorbic acid as my c in my serum, but I have only been using it a month and, if anything, my chin seems to be improving.
My biggest problem is that they seem to be there forever. It's not like a pimple that will last a week or even less with treatment. I just feel like there is stuff stuck in there and exfoliating it will make it surface faster. But, it obviously is not working. And, as you have pointed out, extracting on the chin will cause damage and even when I have tried to extract them, not much comes out and it is almost impossible to fully extract it without a lot of pressure, causing more damage.
I am definitely going to try to not exfoliate as much and I will keep working on this and let you know if I have any progress. Thanks again! |

The one product I can't live without is ASAP glycolic cleanser (12% glycolic). I first tried this product when I was following 'The Acne cure book' which is the only programme that has given me long term clear skin. When I run out of this product, within a week or two I can feel my skin starting to get bumpy in certain areas. The way I use it is to massage it in for about a minute and then leave on for at least 5 minutes before washing off. ASAP also has a scrub (14% glycolic) that I use sometimes too and it makes your skin feel really smooth. |

My situation is even worse. The bumpy area extends along from my chine line to the back of ears. I once watched a tv pgm a facialist mentioned those are caused by congestion in the lymphatic nodes which work to discharge toxins inside the body. He recommended we do massage on our necks - apply pressure and run your palm slowly from the back of ears along the neckline down to the armpit and hold for a few seconds before letting go. The other way is to push your palms from the throat to the side along your neck.
On the surface, i use aha which does quite a good job so far. |
