| I've used pore strips and a suction tool which have both worked well to open and clear the pores, but from a cosmetic appearance alone, I feel that these now open pores look nearly as unsightly as when they're filled with sebum or even blackheads, which return in a couple days, anyway. But in a longer term approach to rehabbing the pores as much as genetically possible, is it necessary to continue to use the pore cleansing tools a couple times a week and eventually they will not reappear as soon? Is it the case that if a blackhead is there, it's essentially blocking any potential improvement/minimizing of that pore? Or should one not concern themselves with clearing a handful of blackheads, but instead focus on letting the pores return to a somewhat more normal state, where proper skin regimen will correct them? I guess another way to ask is if the only way to get rid of a blackhead is to forcibly remove it or if this only elongates the process because it has to refill with what I imagine are other healthy oils and substances that lessen the appearance of an empty hole/pore. I've read these substances inside a pore will stretch it, but again, this middle ground between clearing the pores and when they're most black seems to be the most visually tolerable stage to me. I know there's no permanent solution, but is there a long term strategy to sustain that middle stage longer? I hope this rambling made sense. |

Welcome and great questions! 
Pores are essentially holes so, whilst they cannot independently open and close, they can appear more or less visible depending whether they are congested and also on the plumpness (hydration) of the surrounding skin. The composition of sebum varies from person to person but it also varies with diet and lifestyle.
Pore strips often do not remove the entire clog, they exfoliate the surface of the skin and may remove only the black top of the comedone. As soon as the sebum oxidises again, the blackhead will be visible. AFAIK frequency of extraction will not have a prophylactic effect, in fact it can increase localised inflammation and damage the pore or surrounding skin.
Ensure that your diet and lifestyle meets or exceeds all your government's recommendations for health, exfoliate gently, clear pores with a method likely to remove all of the clog (eg. OCM, lac-sal peel), avoid irritant or drying ingredients (increase sebum production), choose non-comedogenic products, ensure that your entire skincare routine helps maintain the hydration of your skin. With all this together you should see a significant reduction in blackheads.

| I have the same concern with pores. I read a bit of the OCM thread and I'm glad I did because I had no idea it was so effective, but I would rather buy a cleansing oil than make one myself. Anyone has one to recommend ? I know Shu Uemura and MAC have one, but I'm wondering if it will have the same unclogging effect. |
