I love semi-DIY. Many of us take a ready made product and tweak it out with a few ingredients to make it more effective.

I prefer Daler's and Fawnie's approach. Far better serum or lotion in the end with out grits and bits that are not sufficiently incorporated into the 'base'. Requires the same amount of time anyways.

Yes, I am sure that it is easy to make but some people do not want to make a base - and prefer a *good* pre-base as a starting point. Hence, the topic of the thread.
For example, the bases in my first post have a lot of great oils and extracts. I am not in a position where I want to purchase all the individual ingredients that is needed to recreate it.
So, let's post DIY bases in another thread.

A lot of the brands named here are impossible for me to find where I live.
So I solved the semi-DIY problem by looking for a cream or lotion, any brand, house brands are often quite OK, that have an ingredient I like and cannot DIY. Like right now my moisterizer has hydroxyproline in it, it was quite high in the ingredient list (above the glycerine) and I added my own goodies to that. |

You are soo right. I just dont have the time, nor the proper tools (and yes they probably are easy to get hold of) to start from scratch.
With two children, two puppies, and one geriatric dog ( and a DH who is away half the time) I just about have my own time to do Kassy"S wonderful serum (C E and ferulic) and that is about at 1am
And sometimes I dont even have the energy or the inclination  |

I just want good starting point and add actives to suit.
On the dermarolling thread, I posted that I am thinking of using Skin Actives Antioxidant Booster and add in some A and C for post rolling.
That is the kind of DIY I have time for!
I'd love to hear of any other good pre-made bases out there! |

canvas base used to be my primary base cream, I used it for couple of years! and it's soo not expensive, $6 for 4 oz! Before that I used atopalm as a base and it was expensive! |

My assumption is that the niacinamide is loaded at about 2%, so I just kick it up a notch (a la Emeril  ), and I also like to add a little oil to my CV products. |

Green Tea & Pomegranate Night Cream, 2 fl oz (59 ml).. About $8. comes in a tube which I love!
Ingredients: De-ionized water, aloe vera (aloe barbadensis) leaf gel*, caprylic/capric triglyceride, cetyl/stearyl alcohol blend and glucoside, vegetable glycerine, glyceryl stearate, stearic acid (vegetable source), sweet almond oil, cetyl alcohol, glucose/glucose oxidase/lactoperoxidase (natural preservative), ceteareth-20, shea butter, soy lecithin, natural pomegranate essence, potassium sorbate, xanthan gum, green tea liquid extract (made form organic green tea*), pomegranate liquid extract, d-alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), retinyl palmitate (vitamin A), Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) and chamomile liquid extract.

This is a great advice Kassy, but I always wonder if the actives in a base cream would be any good by the time I get to use this product after it has been sitting on the self for months! |

IMO do not just add powders directly to creams, certainly not if they are potential irritants/ powerful actives. Many years ago I trained in hospital pharmacy and one of the trainee tasks was adding a tiny amount of a fluorescent yellow powder to a white cream base. The only way to get a completely even blend without losing the active (was to spend a good half an hour with a glass tile and spatula, adding a little of the powder to a little of the cream. Making sure all the powder ended up in the cream was interesting even without windows and doors to the outside - that stuff stained!
The alternative is to weigh out your powder, add a little solvent (sterile water, alcohol) directly to the weighing boat then add the dissolved liquid to your cream. This is quicker, easier to get an even blend, conserves the active and means your cream is exposed to the air for less time. If you want to add a few actives you would be safest finding a supplier of a product that is designed to be a cosmetic base, or the plainest mosturiser you can find in the pharmacy. |

regarding astaxanthin, if the gel caps is 4mg or even 10 mg astaxanthin, its almost colorless but if its v bright red/orange, then coloring has been added to the gel cap.. I just recently found this out! I use swansonvitamins gel caps and it used to be bright red inside and this time it was almost colorless so I called up em n they told me that they no longer add the red color! |

I added/increased;
- 2% CoQ10
- 2% Fruit Extract (from Lotioncrafter)
- 3% Malus Domestica (Apple) 2 to 5% recommended (eh  )
- 5% Matrixyl3000 (3 to 8% recommended)
- 2% Meadowfoam Seed Oil
- 1% DMI
- 2% Pumpkin Seed Extract
- Couple drops Germaben 2 (preservative)
1.) CoQ10 into the oil that I heat gently
2.) Everything else into a TBS distilled water, stirring each addition in well
3.) Put 1 and 2 together, blend well, put in container of your choice.
Makes just about 2oz. I put mine in 1oz airless pump containers. Here's what it looks like.
**NOTE** The addition of CoQ10 is what turned the serum yellow!
The retail cream has an insignificant amount of co q 10, so it is white... (You'll find that is the case for most retail products, whether they are $20. or $200.) If your product isn't yellow/orange, you got punked... |

LOL! One of the grandkids were here when I whipped it up, and he thought I was making banana pudding..
Turns out I'm really enjoying this lotion.. Sinks in quickly and thoroughly. (The cream as purchased was too thick for my taste.)

Just buy a base cream and actives, find a solubility chart so you'll know what to use to dissolve your dry ingredients and add and stir. Maybe try a kit first, so you'll get a good product and learn a lot along the way.
Skin Actives has base creams. But your own regular moisturizer that has nothing in it that you're allergic to can do just as well. If things get too runny, maybe a little lecithine or gel maker is nice to have on hand to fix it.
