Lately, I've been intensely working on updating my skincare routine and some days I know I get too hung up over it....but I know it will pass, I'll go away for awhile, then come back for updates. That's been my pattern since beginning my skincare "hobby" in 2006. I develop a routine, go with it for several months, then come back, study again and tweak.

Anyway, just when I begin to doubt that all this time/money/attention is worth it, something happens. Like I'll get compliments and then I realize it's all working...or what happens more often is that I will go out with friends I haven't seen for awhile, friends around my age and then I notice something that sometimes freaks me out: guys my age - their skin looks bad. Most of my women friends have great skin, but our men friends - deep, deep wrinkles and folds and age spots...I assume from not doing anything and no sun protection.

So my point here is that how you take of yourself really does matter, particularly at midlife...and I am referring to physical health as well as appearance.

Rave On!

Amen, BFG!

I've mentioned this before, but my sister is a prime example of not taking care of her skin until now at the age of 46. I'm 49 and have been faithfully following a skincare routine now for a good long time (wish I had started some 30 years ago though), but my sister is not good with using sunscreen and she was a mobile notary for 6 years, driving in the sun for hours each day. She never takes any vitamins/minerals because she hates to swallow pills, sleeps with her face scrunched into her pillow and doesn't nearly drink enough water. The skin on her face and hands has taken its toll because of this lifestyle, looking years older than she is. Sadly, she is usually mistaken for my older sister.

But I am proud of her for finally getting into a routine with her skin care and I talked her into always using sunscreen. She's also recently started doing at-home peels, and after only one lactic acid and one TCA peel, her face already looks a little softer.

I just hope that my daughters both start following my lead and start taking care of their skin now. Unfortunately, you can lead a horse to water, but... Sad

I agree. I need to get with the peels once fall rolls around and step up my day system but generally I feel very good about what I'm doing especially the changes I've made in my diet & know that things can only get better. In the last few months since increasing saturated fats people have started guessing my age as a full ten years younger instead of just 5. Not always but more than before.

Yet these same older men think women, who look younger but are their same age, are too old for them.

It's not too late for your sister! I didn't really get serious with my skincare program until around 45 and I've been able to stop the clock almost entirely (except for sagging which can only be corrected by surgery).

Men at Midlife - what can we say about them? LOL often sad. I have my theories. They know, that statistically, they aren't going to live as long as women, so instead of working on themselves, they try to buy youth. Maybe the same can be said about cosmetic surgery. All I know is that I am realistic.
