Hi Magda,
I have a 16 y/o son with moderate to severe acne. He has tried OTC items (w/o success) and then moved onto proactiv.( I don't really see any improvement after 30 days of consistent use). Practically speaking, he will not put the time or effort into a multiple step plan. Can you recommend a product (two at the most) that fits his situation?
Thank you for your advice.

Try "castille" soap or Nutragena brands. |

I agree Barbara that 16 years old has to have simple regime but the least that he has to commit to is unfortunately three steps regime in order to be successful. Up to my knowledge there is no all-in-one product that will solve his acne problems.
There are three essential steps in taking care of acne:
1. Cleansing (it is extremely important to keep his skin always clean)
2. Topical treatment (to treat the acne)
3. Moisturizing (to replace loss of the moisture occurring after topical treatment)
The most important is of course topical treatment step and I would recommend starting with Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Acne Clearing Gel. It is a very potent medication so it is very important to not overdose and start using only every second day at night until his skin gets used to it.
The other good choice for topical treatment would be Murad Skin Perfection Lotion.
If he will only use any of the above acne treatments, his skin will become dehydrated, sensitive, and flaky. That is why it is very important to use light moisturizing gel after acne treatments.
If he decides for three-step kit , I would sugest to consider:
Murad Acne Complex® Kit for Normal/ Combination Skin

I would recommend going to the doctor and getting a course of oral antibiotics (or an antibiotic topical lotion) Best way to go if the acne is impossible to get under control! |

i believe that all teens experience a time when they get break outs. i know for sure that my first break out in my early teens was a very worse one to start with!!! my skin has always been clear and people would comment me on it, but the day next, i realized that my face changed its texture.. its got oily, and before i realized, i had LOTS of pimples and acne.. and it was really s2pid of me to scratch it... so it left me with acne marks.... but now i got the acne/pimple under control... and the scars...well, im fading them... |

Hi Barbara
Boys will be boys...they aren't into 'steps' for skin care.
What IS he willing to do (step wise?)
What is he using now?
Make sure he is not only keeping his face clean, but his hands away from his face - spread of bacteria. Also, make sure he isn't 'over' washing/cleaning as that can irritate the skin and/or make it worse.
Here's a sugggestion that is simplier than Proactiv, gets remarkable results - FAST, and is more affordable!
www.bynouveau.com/abetteryou
This has helped SOO many others with acne, including the CEO's own teenage daughter.
Try it out. There is a 30 day, no questions asked money back guarantee.
If I can help you out in any way with this, let me know
mailto:abetteryou@cox.net
(put Skin Care Forum in subject line so know it isn't spam)
I wish you luck!

ps: if he doesn't use it, put it on your skin (it's not just for acne, but is effective in treating it) and see what happens in less than a week - you might be surprised!

Hi Barbara,
Alpha-H, Alpha teen pack is a great product for skin prone to acne as it contains an antibacterial which prevents the further spread of bacteria on the skins surface. It consists of a cleanser and moisturiser and on the odd occasion maybe a few minutes for a purifying mask. The process is quick and easy. |

Pegasus,
Thank you.Where do I get more info/purchase. I did order what Magda recommended but my son really suffers and if the Murad doesn't work I want something else to fall back on. I also purchased a product from Ireland....Devinas-something to that effect. He is an amazing kid, doesn't complain but I know he struggles with it. |

Yay! Devina's Choice - I really like that stuff. It's got Tea Tree Oil in it to act as an antibacterial agent. Hope it works for him. The only downside is that you have to let it dry for an hour on your face (plus peeling it off isn't all that pleasant). Hopefully that won't deter him from trying it though. |

Hi Barbara!
I am always on the search for many perfect things in life ( perfect make up, perfect skin care, perfect pair of jeans, perfect boy friend,...oops, sorry!!! just so way off...) and a perfect acne treatment that doesn't require many steps and brings overnight result for my black heads, white heads, monthly zits, and once in a while breaks out.
Six weeks ago, while surfing the net I by chance landed on this website:www.skintactix.com. I was quite interested and did give it a try by ordering a kit for 'black heads and white heads' for me and a kit for 'acne rosacea' for my Mom. I don't really have a very bad case of acne, so the result is very subtle, but I'm quite happy now that my pores seem to disappear and those ugly black heads don't look so scarry, eventhough my white heads still bother me ( the third eyes!!!), that I have to see my dermatologist for sure.
If you have time, just stop there for a few minutes and check it out. I have to warn you though, they use real pictures of their patients and some of them quite...graphic...Hope this will help, Barbara. |
