| I'm just wondering if anyone out there does this for a living? If so do you work from home or at a hospital or clinic? Is there a lot of work out there for this profession?. Most of all - do you enjoy it?. I have recently been extremely ill and have decided that I need a "career" change. My current job involves very physical work and being 47 years old and recovering from being sick has made me rethink my future. I just don't think I have it in me anymore to do hard repetitive work. My local career college is offering this course and I thought it sounded like something I might like. TIA, Cathryn |

| I have been a medical transcriptionist for about 24 years. Loved it and I worked from home all those years. I would definitely not recommend getting in to the field now. I have had to go back to school for a new career, as with the EHR's, the need for transcriptionists is fading out. Unfortunately the schools still train people for this career and tell you how much money you can make at it, and that used to be true, but it is definitely not the case any longer! |

| No problem, doodles. I would just hate for someone to spend money on school and then not be able to get a job! I went in to medical coding. That is a really tough field to break in to, but coders aren't going anywhere any time soon. Good luck. I know it can be really tough deciding what to do. I went back to school at 47 and finished a few months ago. |

| I have to admit I don't know much about medical coding. Do you need MT training as a prerequisite for medical coding? Can you still work from home? Just trying to figure out what I'm going to do when I grow up! TIA Rileygirl. |

No, you don't need the MT training, but it helps a great deal because as an MT you know the terminology. Some coders work from home, but that is after they get good experience. You will need to know A&P, medical terminology, and then of course the actual coding. You will also need to be credentialed nationally through either AAPC or AHIMA. I would check either of those websites and that will tell you a lot more about it. Do a lot of research because there are a lot that go through school and are not able to get jobs. |
