After using ascorbic acid in different mediums, I wanted to give magnesium ascorbyl phosphate a try. Earlier today, I tried making my very first MAP serum and it was a total disaster. Total.
I tested the final ph at 4. 4?!?!?!?! There was nothing in the recipe that causes a dramatic ph shift. The only ingredient that I haven't extensively worked with before was the MAP itself, and I'm under the impression that in straight water it ends up between 7 and 8ish.
So I tested the MAP alone in distilled water, and ph was about 2. ??????? I tested it again to be sure--same result. 
Is it possible that the supplier may have accidentally sent me ascorbic acid or ascorbyl glucoside? Or have I been misinformed of the average ph of MAP? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond. |

| I did ph testing with just plain distilled water and a hefty % of MAP. It didn't alter the PH one bit. It was still a solid 7. Where did you order this from? |

I got the MAP from Skin Essential Actives. They're normally great.
I'm assuming I was accidentally sent regular ascorbic acid or ascorbyl glucoside, then. I've never, ever heard of MAP having this ph before.
This really sucks, needless to say. :P MAP isn't the most expensive active ever, but it's still a nice chunk of money I paid for the wrong ingredient. |

Sorry for double posting, but I can't find an "edit last post" function.
I forgot to add that I tasted it (yeah, I already know it's a bad idea to ingest mystery fluid, lol) and it tasted a bit like a solution of salt substitute.
I don't know if this information will help at all, but I'm adding it just in case. |

^I was considering it, but I don't have any way to verify my story.
If I sent the container back (already opened, obviously) they could just claim that I removed the MAP and replaced it with something else.
If it was a supplier I didn't know, I'd be up in arms. But SEA is usually great, so I'm not going to push it. (It's still a little irritating tho!) |

I have a somewhat unrelated question regarding MAP serums, and I couldn't really find a better thread to post it in so I'm just bumping my old one.
Ok, here's the dealio:
I ordered some MAP from lotioncrafter and it is the correct ph. *hurray* The only problem is that the emulsion is separating on me. *sadness*
I think it might have something to do with the fact that I add bht and edta to absolutely everything I make? I did some very minor tweaking to SEA's MAP serum recipe, so it shouldn't really be unstable. Unless the chelation activity does weird stuff to MAP. Anybody know?
I want to mention that I've been shaking the bottle and using it anyhow for a few days. It works like a charm so far, it just looks horrible. 
I read that most people either respond to aa OR it's derivatives. Maybe I'm just lucky. |
