Since i hit puberty my cheeks started getting really flushed. It looks really red and patchy/blotchy with no visible blood vessels. Weird thing is,that every single cleanser i use makes it 10x worse. I once went a week without washing my face with anything but water, and the transformation was amazing. The redness completely went, and my face looked like it did when i was a kid. But the problem with not washing with a cleanser is that i have very oily skin,so my pores got so blocked that i became a breeder for spots, and my skin became very dry for some reason. I have used countless cleansers for sensitive skin, with the least amount of ingredients possible, but still...the redness persists. Also,if i stretch the skin on my cheeks (as in pout my lips and stretch them to a side) the redness fades almost completely. Does this happen to anyone else? Any advice? Thanks! |

Two cheap, easy, and non irritating things to try would be oatmeal and honey. First ensure you are not allergic, of course. For the oatmeal, buy 100% ground oats or rolled oats and either use them whole or grind into a powder for a silkier application. Empty some in you palm or small bowl and add warm water. Mix a little with you fingers and apply to your face. Rub around for at least 30 seconds or leave on until dry. Oatmeal contains a cleansing ingredient and helps with inflammation. You can even get organic oats.
Honey is another option, but it can be slightly more irritating than oats, I think it also has some exfoliating properties. I would try plain oats first, and maybe add a little honey to the mix to try it out.
Check out makeup alley, both honey and oats get rave reviews.
I have been using oatmeal to clean my face in the morning the last few weeks and I love it. I also do not have rosacea or couperous but have a strange flush to my cheeks. One big 'C' shape of redness on each cheek. The odd thing is that they face different ways, if that makes sense. Not sure what the redness is about, derm just basically gave me differin (form of vitamin a) and said it would take care of everything. It didn't but whatever.
Could you be more specific about some of the cleansers you have tried? Maybe some that you noticed less or more irritation with? |

Oh and the stretching skin thing, that is normal. Just like what a sunburn or any inflmation would do.
Does your face feel hot or feverish often? |

Thanks for the reply,kmrmv8.i would say warm-ish. And has the oats and honey done anything for your flushed cheeks at all? |

Dear Shannon123,
You know, I have something similar to you, and it is in fact rosacea, but its very mild. The main thing that brought it on was daily application of chemical sunscreen as well as high mineral content in the water I was washing my face with. After it started, pretty much anything I put on my skin would inflame it, and it was difficult at first to ascertain the culprit. Since I moved away from Paris and no longer use chemical sunscreens, I only have very slight redness that no one would complain about.
I didn't think it was rosacea at the time either, because I had no other symptoms outside of a propensity for broken caps. But I'm now getting regular PDL laser treatments and washing my face with micellar cleansers when my face does look red, and things have been going very smoothly.
Has a dermatologist told you that you do not have rosacea? In my opinion, if your face is exhibiting redness, that means irritation. Rosacea skin protocols are easy to follow and help with all kinds of redness--their main aim is to reduce inflammation.
I also like the other poster's idea of using oats and honey. Oats contain beta glucans which are highly soothing to the skin.
