Here are the depth settings that Dermapen suggest in there video for different area if someone wants to use this as a guide.
Forehead .25 to.5mm
Cheeks- .5 to 1.0mm
under eye- .25mm
above lip- .25mm
chin- .5 to 1.0mm
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=29bWwHzl1ec&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D29bWwHzl1ec
I got this information from a picture of the face on a dermapen YouTube training video. It is at minute 1.08 of the video.
I have to admit I am more aggressive then this on my own skin but everyone needs to make up their own mind. |

I do believe there is a lot of variation in how one can use this device. I've had treatments by 3 different practitioners and they have all been different - yet effective in their own way. And when you are treating yourself I think there is probably even more flexibility (partly because of the instant feedback). I'm guessing the training video is meant to be conservative to help practitioners get comfortable with the device and I know that I certainly wouldn't want anyone using a high setting on me that wasn't pretty experienced. |

Practitioners are usually going to be more conservative - they don't want problems, complaints, legal hassles, etc.
The general public is not likely to have read the same info we here have read regarding collagen induction.

That's great info. I will start on the conservative side and see how I go. My skin was good with 0.5mm rolls so it gives me a good starting point. Thnx |

I just had training with the DermaPen rep and he gave me good information. First, the longer the needles, the faster the speed needs to be. And basically, you can't over treat. Keep adding serum to keep things smooth.
So .5 on forehead can be 3-4 on speed. AND not what I did on Thursday, 2.5 at speed 3.
And you can get super close to the eyes. Underneath, you can almost to the lash line! Above the eye, you can go under the brows. I had no idea.
I did a 25 year old girl with acne scars today and did .5-1 almost everywhere and then went over her cheeks with 2.0 and speed of 7. |

LauraLizzie- does the day spa you work at take before and after pictures of clients if they do a series of Dermapen treatments? It would be interesting if you see any changes in the different clients you are treating as time goes on. |

We do take pictures of people before and after services but with the "social downtime", we don't take pictures right after this service. And so far, people have done the DermaPen as one of many services in their rotation. So it is hard to say if it is the IPL, fillers, Botox, Hydrafacials, good skin care, APeels (or VI Peel) or the Dermapen that has them looking so good.
We need to find some skin care virgins! |

Thank you for sharing details of your training, it does seem to mesh with what we here have learned by trial and error.
Thanks! BFG |

LauraLizzie- Did the Dermapen training rep say anything about the type of movement you should be using for a treatment? ie: more of a stamping motion over troubled area or the circle motion they show in the training video, or combination etc. Did they mention how long a treatment should take?
Also I think they are coming out with different products that you needle into the skin. Did he/she talk any about that?
Thanks for your help. |

He said to make 3 passes per area. Vertical, horizontal, diagonal and then circle and or stamp problem areas.
Divide the face into zones - forehead, eyes, cheeks, and mouth and chin. Use movements like a microderm, have enough serum to see that each pass cuts the plow lines in half
Time is about 30 mins to numb if using EMLA and 30 for the treatment. |

Sounds like what I've been doing. Thanks LauraLizzie |

Check this out - does it look like a gimmick? Apparently you put in the freezer, freeze it, then roll it over your skin pre or post procedure for pain relief:

I see they are advertising Lance's book on their site...I wonder if this would be less messy and more effective than a regular ice bag?

I purchased the ice roller with steel head. Will report back - plan to use it maybe more with peels than needling....

LauraLizzie - I just want to know what med spa you work at! South or North Carolina by any chance?
I just made a 4 hour round trip last week to go to a DevaCurl hair specialist, so I'm willing to travel!
Did the training rep give any specific instructions about using the DermaPen for lip lines? |

Pinot, I'm making real progress with Dermapen on the lip lines, but that said, I still have a ways to go. I do think this device will get rid of them, but depending on the number and the depth of the lines it may take several treatments. |

Panda1 - Thanks for the encouraging word!
Are you getting DermaPen treatments at a salon/doctor's office or do you own your own DermaPen or My-M device?
Congrats on the great results, btw! |

I am getting my treatments from an aesthetician. I think the My-M is probably a great device, but I am lazy and don't want to devote the time and effort to doing the treatment myself. Maybe more importantly, my husband tends to freak when my face gets bright red so I manage to get my dermapen treatments when I travel and he is none the wiser. The aesthetician does a nice glycolic peel prior to the treatment so there is a bit of pampering involved and I am big on that:) And she uses some high powered numbing cream so the treatment can be pretty aggressive and it doesn't hurt a bit.
I am really sold on this needling stuff. I think this is a sure thing in terms of results, but it requires patience - and maybe persistence depending on age and extent of improvement required. I only wish I had started it much earlier. |

Panda,
If I remember right, you've had several of these treatments now? I am curious how many and over how many months and what results you are seeing in your skin at this point?
Thanks so much, BFG |

BFG, I've had six treatments since December, 2012. The first was by a doctor, the next three were done by a Dermapen rep/trainer, and the last two have been done by an aesthetician trained by the Dermapen rep. The treatments have mostly been four weeks apart. The tricky thing about results that take place over time is that they are much harder to notice. Pictures help, but with something like lip lines it is more a matter or just looking in the mirror one day and realizing that they are much less noticeable.
A couple years ago I stopped wearing turtleneck sweaters because I felt that they emphasized my jowls. I had two Ulthera treatments that I didn't really think much of, but last winter I put on a sweater with a high neck and was amazed at the "lack of jowl". Honestly, I hadn't really noticed it until that point, and that is kind of how the Dermapen results are starting to show up. I am noticing the results most on my neck and my upper lip, but I am also seeing a decrease in pore size around my nose. I'm pretty sure that if I stopped the treatments now I would continue to see improvement for awhile, but I plan to continue - although perhaps with less frequency.
I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic. I don't want a face lift so I am turning to needling to keep the collagen production up. One other thing to mention, I had some skin damage from the Ulthera. There was a spot on my right cheek that "crinkled" kind of like synthetic fabric when you use an iron that is too hot. The Dermapen did fix that after the first couple of treatments. |

This is fabulous!! I can't wait to try one of these gadgets.
Also, apologies to Panda1, I didn't see that you had already brought up the DermaJet when I made my thread about it. And apologies to the lovely BFG, for not remembering it was you who made the very insightful comment about dermapens potentially cannibalizing owndoc's other products. |
