In my case, I'm going to a spa this week for the first in a series of IPL treatments and a microdermabrasion. Each IPL treatment is worth $300, and the microdermabrasion is $125.
I definetly tip generously for haircuts and massages, since someone is spending 90 minutes non-stop pampering me and I know they work really hard. I've never has this sort of thing done before though.
But are you expected to tip for "procedures", like microdermabrasion, IPL or lasers?
How much is expected/insulting?
Tipping 20% on $300 (so that's $60) for 30 minutes of IPL seems ridiculous, compare to 20% on a $100 massage (only $20) for an hour and a half of head to toe pampering. Am I just being cheap? |

No- you're not being cheap... It's a very good question actually and I am wondering the same thing... how much?
What I can tell you from my experience with laser hair removal, tipping is expected, at least at the place I go to (they exclusively do hair removal). After my session was over and it was time to pay, they told me my total charge and also handed me a small "tip envelope" to tip my laser tech. I was at a loss as to how much to give. The total time for the procedure was 20-25 minutes tops and cost about $150. I think I put $15 in the envelope. I don't want to be cheap either but jeez... it seems like EVERYONE wants a tip these days. It gets tiresome |

I ended up NOT tipping, and here's why:
When I went to my appointment, the tecchnician (or whatever you call the person giving you the treatment), asked me what I wanted done. I told him my main concerns were acne and redmarks. He told me I have to choose one, or pay the extra fee. I was like... "what? I called here before making my appointment and I told the receptionist I wanted IPL for ance and red marks and she said te treatment would treat both. She did not mention ANYTHING about extra fees!"
Apperently, the fine print said that the IPL treatments were for one skin concern only, but a full package was available for an extra $35 per session. After much arguing, the technician gave me the "full package", which included treatment for acne, red marks, capillaries, rejuvenation, etc. for free, to convince me to buy the packages for my next 3 sessions.
I did not like that there was a "catch", it definitly was not mentioned that there was a $35 fee, and I had even called to confirm that I would have both acne and redmarks treated.
So I did not tip.
I did tip for the microdermabrasion though, because that treatment went well, the ladywho did it was super nice and thorough and very professional, and also gave me a full facial. |
