I overused my DPL panels by doing more than the recommended 17 minutes per day. Yes, I shouldn't have done that, but they don't say anywhere that you can develop problems by doing more than 17 minutes. I probably used it for 30 minutes a day for a week, with the panels placed on my chest, to reverse sun damage. Toward the end of the week I developed weird patches of rough pink slightly scaly skin that look like actinic keratoses.
I stopped using the DPL on my chest altogether. That was six weeks ago and these patches are STILL there, and not only that, they've spread! They don't itch at all, and a few of them have faded slightly, but it's unsightly. I should probably go to my dermatologist, but I don't really want to spend the money right now, and my derma isn't the hippest person. He probably won't know anything about what infrared light does for skin and will just prescribe a corticosteroid or something.
Has anyone else had this issue? Will it go away? Is it skin cancer??? I think red light therapy (red lights are included in the DPL along with infrared) increase ATP in cells. (I could be wrong about this, if so I apologize). But then wouldn't they help cancel cells to proliferate as well?
I want to make clear that I'm not trying to be dramatic or scare anyone by mentioning this and I have no evidence at all that red/infrared light therapy might have this effect. From everything I've heard, this type of therapy is wholly beneficial, and I hope that's true. I'm asking the question because I don't know if this might be possible. Does anyone have this information? If so, I'd love to know! Thank you!
I've never had rosacea or eczema and they don't run in my family, but maybe I had some latent condition and the infrared therapy brought it out? I really want these weird skin patches to go away! |

Susan, have you tried a cortisone cream? |

No, not yet, but you're right--that's a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know if it works. I wonder, though, why the DPL would cause a rash like that. I'm usually not prone to getting them. |
