Any suggestions that really work? I've invested time and money in all the 'over the counter' aides....none work long term....do not want the perscription....afraid of side effects. Thank you! |

Have you tried tea tree oil on the nail externally? It is great on fungus.
I use it on everything from a blemish to scalp itch this time of year.
Although if you cannot get rid of it, do see a doctor. We had a family member who finally gave in, he was so embarrassed come beach time. He was worried about the side effects but he went in, got it taken care of and his toes looked amazing. He was so glad he finally did it after living with that for so long.
So there are medications to get rid of it once and for all and they aren't as scary as they sound if you take it, cure it and get back off. |

Soak affected nail(s) in 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts plain water, for 10 minutes, twice a day. Keep nails short and as dry as possible.
If fungus is on fingernail, wear rubber gloves to do dishes. If it's on toenail, wear only cotton socks if you can - it keeps the feet drier.
This takes about 2 months to work, but my dermatologist told me to do this, and it does work. No nail polish during treatment (sorry).
The vinegar solution can't penetrate the top of the nail when you're wearing polish.
I'm not the most patient person in the world, but I stuck with this and it really did get rid of the fungus infection.

Thank you health2u! I have been using the Apple Cidar Vinegar since that is what I have on hand. I am 'painting' the vinegar on with a Qtip.
Saturating several times and leaving on all day. Then I reapply at night. I may be imagining this but in a weeks time my nails seem to be responding slightly....I don't have the time to soak them right now with this busy season...so I thought I'd at least try this....thanks for your help! JAM |

Jam, I'm glad I spotted your post as I'm just nearing the end of treating fungal nail infection. I had it quite bad on my two big toes - thick, brittle and discoloured, not pleasant-looking at all! I'd also tried all over-the-counter treatments and gave up on them. They're expensive and often inconvenient to keep up with... I'd read a lot of positive reviews of Tea Tree Oil and its anti-fungal properties, so I gave it a try.
It's been almost four months now of pouring a generous amount of Tea Tree Oil in a dish of steaming hot water and steeping my feet for around 20 mins. I've been doing this a few times every week, and on top of that, applying it directly every morning and night, a few drops for each toenail and massaging it in. It's become part of my routine of getting dressed/ready for sleep...
The infected nails have almost completely grown out now, with a clear line where the new healthy nail meets the old infected nail. So I can certainly vouch for tea tree oil - if you incorporate it into your everyday routine you'll find it won't become inconvenient and you're much more likely to stick with it. Persistence is key here as it does take a good few months to get rid of, but I can assure you that the moment you see a healthy pink glow start to appear at the bed of the infected nail, you'll have the motivation you need |

A cousin of mine had a nasty toenail fungus and has tried most of the stuff mentioned online – Vicks Vaporub, Tea Tree Oil, Listerine, etc. I am not sure where he got the information but he was able to finally lick the toenail fungus using potassium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide is mixed in warm water with a ratio of Potassium hydroxide at 20 percent of the weight of water. I was told that he got clearance from his doctor and swore that it was the most effective toenail fungus treatment that he has ever tried. |

This has worked for me: Tincture of Iodine, preferably the colorless type, put on the nail twice daily until it is totally grown out. Make sure you get it soaked well around the cuticles. Just don't stop until it is COMPLETELY grown out or it will get reinfected.
As a preventative, use the iodine once or twice a week. |

I don't know what works...but I know what DOESN'T work: Manuka Oil, Vicks, Laser treatments (TOTAL WASTE OF $$$) and I have my doubts about tea tree oil. I never hung in there long enough because it didn't show any improvement. I was thinking of trying perixode and water 50/50 solution. Mine only shows at the tip of the nail. It never gets worse and never gets better. |

Owndoc has a remedy for toenail fungus that sounds promising. |
