My vote goes to licorice extract. It is anti-inflammatory and has substances that work with a certain enzyme in the skin that inhibit melanin production.
Lemon can have some antibacterial properties but it can also irritate the skin especially when exposed to sunlight. I don't know the mechanism by which lemon lightens skin. It must have some kind of bleaching action such as when I put a lemon in my tea - the tea turns a lighter color. I don't think it's worth the irritation to the skin. |

I would go with licorice as well.
Also, I would think that lemon might irritate your skin. |

| I would ditch both for retin A. I tired both of em for a long time with little to no effect but been using retin A for few months now and my complexion is way brighter... |

I don't think either of them are on par with chemical lighteners, but I've known a lot more people that had success with licorice extracts.
That lemon ferment stuff you can order from DIY suppliers is supposed to be good with skin lightening, but everyone I know who's used it says it has pretty minimal effects. You could try using it and see if it works for your skin type, idk. |

| I would go with lemons as these are readily available in any grocery stores. Licorice is (I think) only available at organic stores or any specialised whole food shops..... But both are good.... |

Lemon juice can be irritating, licorice is not and is actually an anti-inflammatory extract. Lemon Bioferment is the peel of the lemons fermented with bacterias to exact the goodies minus the irritants.
Lemon bioferment from what I've read though you must do your own research claims to be at par with hydroquinone though I'm not really sure on how the mechanism of lemon bioferment deals with skin lightening.
It is said that it's best to use a lightening cream with different actives all at the same time to target the different processes that lead to pigmentation. There's a flowchart somewhere on how certain lightening ingredients do their thing e.g. arbutin, kojic acid and so on.... |
