Hi everyone! I'm new to the board here. I was wondering if I could get some of your expertise to weigh in and give me your thoughts about my skin care routine. I find that I have a million bottles of stuff everywhere and can probably get rid of some, and want to know if the things I'm using are good or too much/many different things for my skin. I try not to wear too much makeup daily, either. Here's a quick snapshot of what I was "blessed" with, and what I'm trying to combat.
Skin Sin #1: Dark red hair with naturally fair skin that tans easily/well. Sunscreen was not always my friend. ::smacking myself::
Skin Sin #2: Acne prone & combo/oily in T Zone and pores the size of craters. Used BP and every other harsh cleanser on the planet up until my 20s and have some scars. Didn't always moisturize but when I did mom used the good stuff. Skin has since gotten drier especially in winter from using antiaging products, and well, maybe age.
Skin Sin #3: Enjoyed the college life and lifelong insomniac (diagnosed). Fine lines starting under the eyes/crowsfeet/laughlines on cheekbones.
Here is my current routine:
AM:
*Wash with CeraVe hydrating cleanser (acne has gotten better with less harsh wash)
*Swipe/Tone (either Lumeme Lift Touch Hydrating for dry skin, or C Booth tea tree if oily/breakouts)
*Spray Moisturizing Antioxidant toner
*Add Hyaluronic Acid Hydra B5 Gel if needed for dryness
*Put on CeraVe 30 SPF lotion w/ ceramides, HA, and niacinimide
*Put on Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer tinted moisturizer as my daily makeup
PM:
*Same routine through the spray toner
*Rotate nightly either Alpha Hydrox Souffle, 1% Skinfinite Retinol cream, Or Nutraluxe MD Vitamin C Serum (I don't see many reviews for the Skinfinite or Nutraluxe anywhere??) Or a 2% BHA + 2% BP if I'm breaking out.
*Once a week do a Freeman's Avacado and oatmeal clay mask
*Once a week do a pumpkin/glycolic enzyme mask
*once or twice a month I'll do a 30% glycolic or 50% lactic acid peel
*My plan is once every 3-4 mos to do a 12% TCA peel although I've only done this once so far.
So as you can see by my ridiculously long post I do alot of things. I also get a facial once a month which seems to help with my clogged pores.
Overkill? On the right track? Should be layering some of these differently? Especially with some of these I haven't seen alot of reviews so I am not sure how well received they are. I also use alot of things so I can't say 100% that they are rocking my world, but seem to do pretty well.
Thanks for your help, you all really seem like experts on here! |

Hi there,
I totally get you for being a skincare junkie...I think alot of us are here. My goodness I've tried so many things.
Generally I think your routine is good, I would just hold off on doing so many peels. The facials are great..I do monthly ones too. Perhaps you could incorporate a nice hydrating mask (even though you do have break out prone skin) or something which add and gives your skin topical nutrition rather than strip it or act as an exfoliant, as you have lots of exfoliation going on.
Glycolic or lactic acid peels I would do no less than 6 weeks apart and the TCA peel should be a substitute for one of these peels when you do decide to do one. I also highly recommend substituting a peel now and then for a microdermabrasion session. So great for clogged pores.
BP is okay and at 2% wouldn't be too harmful. Even though its good for breakouts personally I found in the long run it did more bad than good to my skin...a bit in a pro ageing way . But during breakouts it would be okay. However I do find a serum with AHA/BHA may be better for you instead of alternating your hydrox soufle with the BHA/BP lotion? But thats only a suggestion and would be okay not to do so...this is simply for the reason I stated above about BP and also would involve one and not two products.
I'm presuming you have these skincare products and don't want to waste money buying new stuff,so my comments are based on that. I am not very familiar with the retinol and Vit C products so cannot comment on the actual products sorry. I'm sure they're fine and alternating nights with retinol and the other acids is a great idea to start and slowly build up.
Hope that helps and I havn't confused you too much. |

Thanks for your reply. That's a good point about the exfoliation. My skin usually responds well to it, but I definitely don't want to overdue it. Thanks for checking out my post! |

I forgot to ask - is there a hydrating mask that you recommend? |

There's so many out there.Umm.... I personally like dermalogica one, and one by jurlique too. I like jurlique antioxidant mask, its hydrating as well as nutritious for the skin. Eminence does a few good ones too. I like their stone crop mask. There's also some on the DIY board (see the sticky posts)
My biggest mistake having made about my combo break out prone congested skin was to assume that I should steer away from oils totally (admittedly I can only use argan oil, but still it's an oil) and using the wrong cleansers and over exfoliating. It just makes it worse. Exfoliating is fabulous (and I even use my clarisonic to take make up off) so I'm all for it. But you need to give back a little too. Your skin will benefit in the long run.
If you can get samples I would just try a few that way. |

Try using honey. It's hydrating, softening and brightening. And simple. |

In the DIY thread I read something about honey and yoghurt too (gets hydration and exfoliation)
I LOVE honey too great for so many things. |
