Book based on the theories of psychologist Seth Roberts. He says the brain can be manipulated with flavorless foods such as refined coconut oil or sugar water to lower the weight set point.

Very interesting and worth checking out:

Hey Gretchen,

Yeah, I think I saw the book on Amazon a year or two ago. I didn't understand how on a scientific level, eating refined sugar or refined fat could love the weight set point. Were you able to find any info on this? Thanks.

Actually, SLD is from the mid 2000s. I've eaten a few tablespoons of refined coconut oil by itself this the last week and it does have an apetite suppressant effect. The idea is that there is a flavor/calorie association between foods; good tasting foods (often artificial or processed, but probably foods containing sugar also) tell the brain to raise the set point. So, you might eat more from eating those foods because the brain tells you to and gain, or, be unable to lose. The flavorless calories send a signal that there isn't good food around, so the brain turns the hunger signals down so you eat less and lose, or don't gain.

There are tons of testimonies about the diet and weird tips like nose clipping on the SLD forums, which are mostly dead currently. There are not that many You Tube videos or blogs about it, though there was a series of article in the mid 2000s on Freakonomics. I read about it on the Mark's Daily Apple Forum:
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread74412.html

I think my face looks different after a week of doing it and wonder if telling the brain that "it's famine time" has an effect similar to CR "slowed life force" look. Not totally sure. I'm eating about the same amount as I was before- a little less some days maybe.
