or mix the powder with mica and put it in an empty powder jar and apply it all over my face and body with a puff?
Which technique is more effective and will protect my skin better? Specially from tanning?
Thank You! |

I've used Zinc Oxide allot in my DIY formulations. It is very messy! If you add it too an existing lotion you have to also add an emulsifier or it will separate. Its also a good idea to add some HA serum 1%. The HA helps it absorb in the skin and not leave as much as a white cast. If you apply it with a powder puff it will have you looking very white and pasty. Wear a mask when working with it; it shouldn't be breathed in. |

I posted a recipe on another thread that included mixing it with an existing lotion. There are other ingredients besides just zinc and lotion. I have used that recipe and variations of it with success; so I know it can be done. |

It probably can be done, but you have to consider that by adding something to a ready-made lotion, you are changing a lot of parameters:
1) % of actives. Let's say you have a 2% niacinamide lotion, if you add something to it, it will no longer be a 2% lotion, the percentage will be unknown or so low that it will no longer be effective.
2) you also change the ph of the system
3) you lose control over the preservative system of the lotion.
So, in theory, it can be done, but it will be less effective than doing the whole lotion from scratch. |
